Was Thorton cast because of his role in the Fargo-esque 'A Simple Plan'?

There were a lot of comparisons made between 'Fargo' and 'A Simple Plan' back in the 90s. In his face-off with Hanks, Thorton almost seems to be channelling his character from ASP.

He was in two Coen brothers movies: Intolerable Cruelty and The Man Who Wasn't There. Those films probably had more to do with it.
