Should one watch the show before watching the movie? Necessary?

Having NEVER seen not even a single episode of the show, having not a single clue about what it's even about, and only realizing it was a show based off these IMDB forums, I'm forced to ask this question.

Is having watched the show necessary to enjoy this movie? Perhaps it gives background and previous character development? Or will I not really understand character relationships and plot developments because I have no experience in its past?

Just want to make sure before I watch it (if I watch it). Thanks.

It isn't strictly necessary if you are just interested in the movie. It does work as a single movie to some degree. But if you want the entire Veronica Mars experience you should watch the show first. Each season of the show has a main mystery to it, the movie spoils the end to the first season's mystery and reveals a lot about season 2 as well. Season 3 is less affected though there are some direct references to things that happened then. The mysteries on the TV show are well-done, so I'd watch the show first so you don't get spoiled.

The show definitely helps define the relationships the characters have for each other. One of the main characters of the movie isn't introduced until the last season of Veronica Mars, so having watched the show would help immensely if you want to delve into the backstories of the characters.

I hope you watch the series first, and feel free to tell us what you think. It is always interesting hearing from people discovering the show for the first time.

I watched the first episode of the show before the movie and I wasn't really lost at all. I had a base understanding of who some of the characters were and maybe didn't pick up on some of the references of the show but I still found the movie entertaining. Surprisingly watching the movie I didn't catch on to the killer of season 1 so the plot wasn't ruined for me but I do remember leaving the movie and saying to my friend ' that Logan Echolls, wasn't he the one bashing in her headlights in episode 1?' and she just laughed and said 'keep watching'. Seeing the movie made me want to watch the series so I went and watched all 3 season is a couple of days

Just to be sure, I watched the entire Veronica Mars series prior to watching this. I'm glad I did, it was a really great show. I'm happy I watched it before the movie as well, as the movie meant SOOOO much more knowing the background. I'm sure I would have been completely lost, or just wouldn't have cared about any of the characters, otherwise.

I watched the movie after only having watched some of seasons 1 and 2 years ago. I then went and rewatched the whole series and the movie again. Many details of the movie were certainly more meaningful once I knew more about all those characters.

It's great that some of us have rediscovered VMars. I thought seasons 1 and 2 were really good. I'm grateful to the movie and my library for creating the opportunity for me to see the full series.

I watched the series after I watched the movie. One thing that bothered me was the producers' pitch for a 4th season. After viewers had invested in three seasons I wonder if it was smart to put Veronica into such a different setting as the FBI. Wouldn't it have been better to have something,if not a full season, then a mini-series or just a made-for-tv movie that would have tied up the loose threads (example the outcome of the election for sheriff)from the third season?

I had heard of Veronica Mars but never seen a single minute of the show, I heard about the movie and I like watching TV shows I have never seen before, so I got Veronica Mars' 3 seasons and binge-watched them.

I just watched the movie tonight, after finishing the TV series, so glad I did. Can you enjoy the movie without the series? Of course, but it's a movie for the fans and on its own, it's not as entertaining. You'll probably be lost with some of the things that are happening in the movie if you have not seen the show.

Plus, the show is extremely funny, entertaining, suspenseful and while the 3rd season was not as good as the first two, if the movie interests you at all, get the series first, you'll thank me later.

i have seasons of Veronica Mars TV-show.. but hever got a chance to watch.. even a single episode!

so, judging from the high ratings, i gave the movie a go.
i watched and i didn't like it. it is just and ordinary crime/cop/detective movie and not even a big production like sherlock holmes movies.

i dont know if this movie takes place in 2004 or so.. but those mentions about Veronica's 20 y-o high school kid, noobie P.I. seem weird.. it's not like she is at 2004.. it is 2014 and she is 34 y-o. now!

sorry but i lost the desire to watch the series because of the movie :(

You'll appreciate the film on a much higher level if you watch the series first. Otherwise you'll miss a ton of references.
