Dick's presence in the later series and movie bothered me.

Basically due to his role in Veronica's rape. Logan beat the snot out of anyone who crossed Veronica and Veronica despised Madison Sinclair for her role, despite the fact that she was more of a victim than a conspirator. Dick was trying to dose her.

Sure, Veronica wasn't nice to Dick, but wouldn't your boyfriend associating with someone who attempted to rape a girl and who indirectly led to your own rape bother you more? If part of Beaver's story were true, it was even Dick who encouraged the rape.

Yet Dick was just sort of treated as comic relief. "Oh, that wascally date wapist". His lack of consequences really bugged me.

I couldn't agree more. That really bugged me fora llong time during the show.

true, dick was also an idiot never didn't have the brains to think of things like you folks did just now. or maybe it was just that he teased his brother so much that he was just kidding him in thinking he wouldn't do it.

since he teased him so much and treated him like dirt. just a thought too

Dick didn't drug Veronica. He attempted to with Madison then she passed the drink to Veronica as she saw her pass. All the blame is on Madison and Veronica. Madison for knowingly giving the drugged drink to Veronica to humiliate her since she was jealous of her and Duncan(maybe). Veronica for drinking it without knowing what was in it.

Dick is not at all smart. Maybe limited is a better word. Everybody knows him for who and what he is.

What the hell? Madison did not "knowingly pass the drugged drink" because she had NO IDEA the drink was even drugged in the first place. The only reason she didn't want to drink it herself was because it was soda; she even rolled her eyes when Dick handed it to her. She passed the drink to Veronica solely because she wanted to give her "a trip to the dentist" by spitting in the drink before handing it, not because she knew it was drugged...nor did she specifically want to harm Veronica. You could even see the momentary shock in Madison's face when Veronica revealed to her she was raped the night she gave her "a trip to the dentist."

And "Veronica (is also to blame) for drinking it without knowing what was in it"? Really? It sure sounds like you just desperately want Dick to be innocent. What happened to Veronica was the effect of the cause that Dick initiated. It was his multiple actions (drugging the drink, pushing Beaver to have sex with an unconscious Veronica, etc.) that led to Veronica's rape.

If anyone was to be blamed at all for what happened, it was Dick. The thing is, Dick was written as "the charming a-hole," while Madison was written as the "all-around bitch." Obviously, for those not paying attention, it was WAY easier to hate on Madison than the oh, so charming Dick Casablancas.

No not innocent but not the only one to blame.

Certainly, which is why I said that IF if there was anyone to blame (other than the actual rapist), it was definitely Dick more than Madison, again, considering Dick's actions that night led to the ultimate raping of Veronica.

Veronica never told Madison she was raped, she told her that she gave her a laced drink. The shock was realizing Dick was drugging her, and she passed it along.

While Dick is a idiot jerk, they also did write his entire life collapsing. His Dad was a fugitive, his brother a murderer/rapist who killed himself, his mother wasn't very interested, and he is the laughing stock of the college.

The main reason Logan seems to stick with him is he is so uncomplicated. You see what you get and you know what to expect. Anyone else with his background would be much darker a character.

Yeah, for some reason, I seem to have this memory of Veronica telling Madison about her rape in a bathroom or something (not at Logan's surprise party where Veronica confronts her about "the trip to the dentist"). Madison gives a shocked face, pauses, and goes "Pfft, yeah right" and sort of shrugs it off to save face.

Dick's life collapsing was not nearly enough punishment for essentially being the catalyst for what happened to Veronica. It felt more like a reward, what happened to him, because his "collapsing life" actually made you feel more sympathy towards Dick...while Madison kept being the scapegoat all-series-long simply for passing along a drink she had no idea was even drugged. She was a bitch, yeah, but the kind of bitch who really just found amusement in pushing the other kids in the playground. No serious harm. Dick's antics involved drugging, tormenting his already socially-awkward brother, helping Logan organize that bum fight, and so on. In comparison, Madison was tame compared to Dick, but like I said, it was easier to hate on Madison because she was painted as this all-around bitch while Dick was written as "the charming a-hole."

I mean, Christ, I don't even remember Veronica so much as confronting Dick about HIS laced drink that eventually led to her raping...yet the writers made her confront Madison about something she didn't even know anything about?

Re: Logan's reason for sticking with Dick. That's one shining example of Dick being written as "the charming a-hole," and it obviously worked what the writers did because you're using it now to defend the character.

I know the scene you are referring to, all she tells Madison is 'I was drunk, someone put GHB in my drink'. That is why she looks shocked, she knows the drink Veronica had was hers. With Madison being her 'enemy', she is not going to give her any ammunition.

She goes after Madison because Madison goes after her. She feels she can squash Dick (the line 'don't you instinctively fear me'), and doesn't find him as worth the time.

I'm not defending him, I'm saying their reasoning for keeping him. Mainly Dick stays because they love Ryan Hansen, he went from a one liner to a main cast member because they wanted to keep the actor around. If Veronica did go after him, his character would have to be written out.

Also cuz going after Dick is like clubbing baby seals or stealing candies from kids.

no, he wouldn't. He was guilty of being a Dick. In all 3 seasons and a movie, Dick actually never raped anyone. He never killed anyone. He was merely running around saying obnoxious things to people.

And when he told Casidy "do it, just do it" it was just another instance of him being obnoxious.

Being obnoxious is not illegal.

His brother didn't have to rape VM just cause D told him so.

now fact tha Dick has tried to drug his own gf is both ugly and weird, as I doubt she was not "putting out"

I always suspected Logan staying so loyal to Dick and Veronica giving him a free pass for his part in her rape (OOC of both IMO) was entirely to do with his portrayer RH being adored behind the scenes and them wanting to keep him with the show.

That's not to say I thought Dick had no merit as a character, he was good comic relief however I do agree with OP the characters sins were a a little too horrifying to overlook just because he was funny.

reply

Look at Skinny Pete in Breaking Bad. He's a meth user AND dealer, who also dealt with meth recoverers, but he's hilarious enough for us to overlook the fact that what he does crosses the line.

Can you picture that?

Did dick actually tell his brother to rape Veronica?

Yep, he goaded his bro to have sex with Veronica who had passed out. That is pretty much pressuring people to rape.

It would be nice if he ever got a comeupance, but it didn't happen. Instead he's still an a-hole and has a weed card now. And of course he was involved somehow with another skeezy murder/death.

It's just "human nature".

One of my former housemates (https://worsthousematestory.wordpress.com/lina-carrero/) was a *beep* insane girl. She accused a guy she didn't like of attempted rape and actually came back to the house to steal things from us after she had left the house for good. She also had a complete stranger move in after she left the house without telling anyone that were living there at the time (i.e., me) so that she could get his bond money. Despite all these crazy antics, her friend stayed friends with her and came up with all these crazy rationalizations. This Lina Carrero chick actually threatened this friend's BF when he didn't let her steal, I meant run away with a complete stranger's money. And they are still friends. I thought that was insane.

When I told this to my partner, he just chalked it up to being "human nature" and that it was extremely understandable that they would remain friends. If one of my friends turned out to be a thief, I would try to talk to him/her and try to make him/her see the error of their ways but I guess not everyone is like that.....

I agree, Veronica should at least of had it out with him. When he forwarded the sex tape as it was "good porn" in season 3 she hurt him back by telling him that Logan had shagged Madison (and didn`t she also step on his broken toe?) and back in season 1 when he made the "all fours" comment she flattened his tyre on his car.

I know Veronica hates Madison and vice versa but when she confronts her in the bathroom about the "trip to the dentist" and the resulting rape she is blaming Madison but all Madison did was spit in her drink, she didn`t know it was laced with liquid X.

If Dick knew Madison better and had put it in a diet drink instead of regular, then she would have been raped, not Veronica.

If Dick didn`t think it was OK to drug his girlfriend to loosen her up it would not have happened.

Also, Logan doped Duncan and the result of that was that he and a drugged Veronica had sex, which would not have happened if Veronica was not drugged. If a doped up Duncan had hit on a sober Veronica she would have knocked him back.

If Logan didn`t bring the liquid X in the first place none of this would have happened.

(I remember that Logan did tell Veronica that he laced Duncan`s drink and she got past it and they carried on kissing, he left and she found the camera).

I do not recall anyone ever saying to Dick "it is not OK to drug someone and then have sex with them!"
