I was depressed that she ended up pulled back into Neptune. Her dad also made a comment that he didn't want that to happen. When the TV series ended she was headed for an FBI career and thrilled about it. The teaser for season 4 showed this could have been fun.
As an alternate twist ending, the initial scene with the job interview could have turned out to be part of an FBI operation against a major company. Suddenly we find her life is fully on track and she has all the power.
I don't think the show ended with any indication of going to the FBI. The "teaser" for a 4th season showed her with a Jr FBI story, but that was a pitch to the studio that may not have even been the story they would go with.
It would be a pretty tough sell credibility wise. Veronica was a lead suspect in an ongoing FBI case, and was pretty much known (though they couldn't prove it) that she had helped Duncan kidnap his daughter and escape the country. That along with other run ins with the law, would have been held against even considering her for an FBI spot, despite how good her crime solving was.
Her PI personality actually does not mesh well with FBI protocol. She and Keith were constantly breaking the law to solve cases (common among PIs) and her type of rebellion would not fit well in the FBI. Even if she did make it past all the tests and personality tests/reports (Extremely unlikely) her way of doing things would have gotten her thrown out within a week.
And from the show point, a big part of the show was the supporting characters and Neptune itself. Veronica without all the others just wouldn't have been as popular, wouldn't be Veronica Mars.
The show was always a bit noir. A major theme of Noir is Not being able to get out, or the old "Just when I think I'm out....." It fits with Weavels story the same way, and her comments of it being like an addiction. Mostly referred to as though Logan were her addiction but really indicating the P.I. life was her addiction and she just couldn't stay away.
To Love and win is the best thing. To Love and lose, the next best.
It was indicated in series 3 that Veronica was interested in this FBI goal and the teacher (who became a murder suspect) indicated that she had a good chance of acceptance, that he could arrange some sort of acceleration/further education closer to the FBI. I vaguely recall that his contacts in the FBI had already shown interest but am not sure.
I think it was also said in one of the special features concerning season 4 that this was always the goal of the writer, but intended for a later season. I imagine newer characters would have been phased in, older characters phased out. The proposed jump for season 4 did seem like a desperate gambit, though it would not have ruled out cameos and a continued relationship with some of the characters.
I accept she would probably not have stepped from the end of season 3 into an FBI role. Even in the season 4 promo there was some sort of passage of time indicated. New friends and enemies had been made in the interim.
It's hard to imagine her at a top notch NYC law firm like the one she was interviewing with in the beginning. Veronica Mars always was anti-establishment and working at a top NYC corporate law firm would be a tough adjustment for her character.
However, I agree that her back in Neptune as a PI was not a ending. I could see her as a public defender. But her job needed to be a step up.
Wow almost a year ago ;) .. yes that her aspiration was a corporate lawyer also didn't fit right with me. I would have preferred it to be a sting operation on that firm.
i think after what happened at the end of season 3, with her dad destroying evidence to protect her, she decided to "go clean" and took it way too far. she would have been MISERABLE at a law firm defending corporations! ugh!
Were you even paying attention during the movie? Rob Thomas practically hit the viewers over the head with the idea that Veronica is an addict. (To the point that I was ready to stab a pencil in my ear.) Veronica is addicted to the chase, to the PI lifestyle, to the damage and mystery. Veronica is self destructive.
THAT'S why her father wanted her out of Neptune so badly. He wanted her to live a happy life away from the destruction and to stop being destructive. That's why Veronica and Logan are both such a good match and a toxic match. They're both damaged, messed up people who can't seem to get out of their self-destructive cycles. That's why Keith said the Navy was good for Logan. Without it, Logan probably would've end up dead in a ditch somewhere or might have even committed suicide. He was a mess.
It is not that I disagree with your interpretation, I simply find it unenjoyable and would have preferred a different resolution. Im not interested in confrontational exchanges so I won't respond further.

I'm not trying to be confrontational, but I really don't understand what you expected. The show established that both Veronica & Logan were self destructive and I honestly don't see the movie doing anything else that would've been realistic for their characters. If Veronica had never left Neptune her and Logan likely still would've been on this carousel of a self-destructive, distrusting (on Veronica's part), toxic on and off relationship.
I just finished watching all 3 seasons and the movie for the first time. I loved the ending of the movie...Veronica didn't seem happy in NYC...she didn't seem like Veronica.
And I think both Veronica and Logan had learned enough in the 9 years apart to work better together. I found the ending satisfying.
