Excellent sequel
The characters are back in force, Begbie is as terrifying and hilarious as ever, and Boyle’s style is just as full of energy.
I liked how it used our memory of the first film and nostalgia for that era to comment on being ‘a tourist in your own youth’.
In a way the film is for older people looking back, and the beauty and pain of doing so. I don’t know if younger audiences will connect.
This could have been another hollow, cash-grab sequel. It wasn’t at all. It stands alongside Top Gun: Maverick as an example of how to do a legacy sequel properly.
