Why was he shocked?

I thought he chose Sophie 2 on purpose. He knew his wife loved and *beep* and preferred the other him, so he chose #2 on purpose. I thought he was teaching Sophie #2 their history in the bed just before she went down to cook him the bacon. Why wouldn't he choose sophie #2?

God pod people movie. Liked it, good use of my Everclear.

Apparently there are various theories (according to what I'm seeing on this board), but I think it's pretty clear that he was intending to take original Sophie home.

He wasn't teaching Sophie #2 their history, he was complaining to Sophie #1 about how she stole all the covers the previous night.

Why wouldn't he choose Sophie #2? Because at no point did he love her. All he ever said was that he wanted the real Sophie, that he could never "be more interested in another version of her." He explained the whole trick to her in the bathroom, and gave her the whole speech about how she should get away with him because they're the real "thems", and how he's her real husband, and how he wants to be together again even if they're messy. We never see him change his mind about any of that.

I now have over 7000 films; many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK! 

To me stealing the covers was just more confirmation that it was S2 -- he had already slept with S1 a lot, and he was remarking on this as though it was the first time.

I know this comment is from 2 years ago, but this is a great insight to be rubbed in the faces of the people who overthink it. The ending is pretty clear imho, even though almost every theory i've read works (if you really want to make it so). I do get the impression that many of the commenters ended up here as more of a fans of the "romance" genre (through a "odd romance movies" search, as someone stated), so i get why they would want the happy end (E1 and S1 leaving).

But the *E1 leaving with S2* makes the movie far more badass, sinister and sci-fi-ish (although i see it more as supernatural), and this is why i personally loved it. E1+S1 would be kinda cheesy, almost slightly pathetic, at least for me.

I thought that too, but when he was surprised when she said bacon I think it's clear that he did NOT think that.

Check out Sophie's hair from the time they're in the car....
