Well he could go full bore Charles Bronson in search of revenge against those responsible for killing Liz... that would be a welcome relief.

And we don't know yet if she dies or just ... gets arrested by the FBI and that's all, Red is forced to kill everyone that could threaten her ... and I thing this would be the only motivation Red could have ... or to protect the granddaughter but I don't see who would want to hurt her - although for the writers might not be a stretch ...
Oh, I'm sure the writers will be able to paint Townsend as a pawn of some larger more nefarious organization.
shareWell, they can do that as well, but not that easy in that case: Townsend wanted revenge on personal basis, not just as a puppet of someone bigger.
Even the kill order is called "the Townsend directive" so it implies is his express order. To "invent" someone bigger at this point while something they might do it's unlikely. And stupid (not the first stupid shit they would do ...)
Ugh. This has been coming for a while I think. It's dumb, but they've made such a bungled mess out of her character that the show actually worked better when she was written out of it for a while. But my lord, she IS the show, the whole thing is structured around her. What a mess this turned into.
