Lovecraftian Gods. Look up Cthulhu. He has a cameo in the movie.

Good point. I figured that's what they looked like, but I didn't remember seeing Cthulhu.

One picture did look like some sort of tentacly-headed thing. And people did go insane from merely glimpsing an Old One in a lot of the Lovecraft stories, so this theory is as good as any.
