I just don't get it.
This show got better every season.
This could have run for another three or four seasons easy. I read all Dumas' books, this story is not over.
Great finale, but I am very disappointed this show is ending.
Yeah, this was easily my favorite BBC show this century. It doesn't seem like it got a fair deal from the network in terms of advertising and broadcast arrangements, but I'm grateful for the three years those involved created. This was a great show.
shareThe viewing figures in the UK haven't been good for a primetime drama - they started well, but then fell by the end of S1 and dropped further for S2 - hence why the BBC hasn't promoted it or supported it like they should have.
Also, British dramas don't tend to go on for as long as American ones anyway, with only a few exceptions ( soaps and Doctor Who ). British actors don't like to be tied down to one drama for years on end, again soap actors being an exception.
I do think the show could come back as a one-off 2 hour episode, to see how Captain d'Artagnan is doing under King Louis: the Sun King ( the adult king ) and most / all of the other three.
I don't understand why this never ending story ended! Why why why?
shareAs others have said viewing figures weren't great. Money is probably also an issue. The BBC is under a lot of financial pressures and they have to make choices between ongoing shows and commissioning new drama.
shareThe reason the viewing figures dropped is because this is patently a comedy series for children or the those lacking the smallest trace of critical faculties.
The writing is trite, the plot so predictable that it's nothing short of boring and the acting is cringe-worthy, with every "twist" so clearly telegraphed that it was hard to stay awake. As for the swaggering heroes and villains, I have no doubt that Dumas would be turning in his grave while trying to coin a French word for "dumbed-down overacting".
How many episodes have you watched?
shareSo? Da Vinci's Demons, Atlantis, Hercules, Doctor Who, Xena and Young Indiana Jones Chronicles could all be described so - and they did OK.
In fact, it's those qualities that appealed to hipsters like yourself who like to watch Doctor Who 'ironically' - whatever you mean by that. (It's just what everybody else calls a sneer, isn't it?)
Naw, Young Indiana Jones Chronicles stuck very close to historical reality - more so than the movies, actually, and was better than this show. It's fine if you like it, but it really isn't that great (I wanted to like it, btw), and I can see why it isn't being renewed. Sorry that you're losing a show you like - that always hurts.

The show was noticeably worse in Season 3. I wish we had more, but it wasn't getting better.
shareI liked Season 3. However, the second half seemed a bit haphazard. That saying, I imagine the writers were pressed by execs to close the series up. I always sympathize with writers. It's not an easy job to begin with... but having to deal with a fickle audience and idle minded executives making your writing decisions for you just makes it near impossible.
I blame the execs for any Season 3 shortcomings. I think the writers did the best they could.
Yeah, that could very well be the case. The first two seasons were truly amazing. Athos was especially well written and acted.
