McKenna? Who the Heck is McKenna?

Just putting this in its own thread, since I'd like other's feedback.

Not at all comfortable with the idea of bringing in a ships' counselor as a new regular character. I don't like my Star Trek either touchy-feely or politically correct. The combination of Bones and Spock as advisers always worked fine before.

But if there HAD to be a shrink on the show, then why bring in a new character when there already was fan favorite Dr. Helen Noel as ship's psychologist?

Sorry, it just doesn't feel right.

I don't think Noel tried to manipulate Kirk, just ran with something they both would be aware of. And she did some fine ass-kicking in that episode.

I just feel like for a series that is really trying to capture the flavor of TOS, and seems to be really big on bringing back favorite classic characters, Noel makes a ton more sense than McKenna.

I've got no problem with McKenna as she's a Psych DOCTOR and not just a counselor.

Troi was is basicly a Licensed Therapist in Space!

reply

Yeah, she's out of place in ST. Despised counselor Troi as a character and McKenna is not helping STC. She'd make a great Chapel though and then they could really bring out the McCoy/Chapel dynamic and we might have something there.

Now, maybe if they made her more of an ass kicker "tough love" type (sorry, just an example), or did something to update or "futurize" her approach it might be acceptable but they they should ditch the trite pop psych angle fast.

When I first saw her, I was like "who the hell is this". She's out of place. I don't care for her presence. It takes away screen time from other characters.

But she sure looks damn good.

Michele Specht as Dr. Elise MacKenna is fortunate to have a new character created for her; the Star Trek Continues series is otherwise devoted to being similiar to the original classic series.
Michele Specht is a great addition; I would have no problem if her character's name was Dr. Helen Noel.

The character of Dr. McKennah is nothing more than nepotism incarnate and unwanted window dressing.

Plus the character's name was stolen from the one that Jane Seymour played in the 1980 time travel fantasy Somewhere In Time.

reply

Well I dont really approve of a new regular either, she should have
been nurse chapel.

I wondered if maybe she and vic have a thing on the side, like with
roddenbery and majel ??

they are dating each other, according to their facebook page.

Exactly. They would maintain continuity, and Noel was a pretty kickass character.

She's great, I really like her in the show. I like some of the liberties they took in general, like having a counselor and holodeck, even though the original series didn't have it. I think makes the new production less predictable, more exciting. Bring it on!

Oddl;y enough, The Holodeck first appeared in The Animated Series.
