Why Didn't Hall Move?

In the movie Rob Hall still seemed fairly mobile when he noticed Doug was gone. So, why didn't he start moving down at that point? Was it the storm? Lack of oxygen?

Also, Hall is always hailed as the better leader than Fischer and it's noble that he stayed with Doug, but his poor leadership caused the problem in the first place. With the late time and Doug's condition and the rest of his group already heading down, Hall should've been the leader and told Doug he wasn't going to make it again that year and forced him to turn around at that point. He also still had Beck waiting for him. I think he felt pressure because all of Mountain Madness's team had summited and Krakauer was doing a story, and also he felt he owed it to Doug since it was Doug's second try in two years. But really, he owed it to Doug to get him off the mountain safely. A huge mistake all around.

Doug apparently lasted longer in real life. Rob didn't mention anything about Doug being gone until the next day. He also questioned what happened to Andy Harris around that same time.

The link is for a show called Everest - The Death Zone. Navigate to about the 10 minute mark, they are on the South Summit and at about 10:24 they will point to a snow drift that is actually Rob Hall's body. He is right on the ridge, I suspect the other two men just toppled over the edge since their bodies were never found.

Going to check that out.

Rob was in no way a "better leader" than Scott. That was one thing that upset me about the film; it depicted Scott as this "bro" who just hung out and got drunk and was like, super chill, bro. Scott was just as professional as Rob, although, like Scott said in the film, they had very different climbing and leading styles.

In Everest's Death Zone, when you sit down, you don't get back up. The few people that have report bizarre hallucinations, like Sandy Pittman, who said in the white-out blizzard, she stopped panicking eventually and just sat there because she hallucinated she had made it down the mountain and was relaxing in a teahouse. She waved her arms around in the snow because she was trying to flag down a waiter for more tea.

Rob sat down and, mentally and physically, it became impossible for him to stand back up, let alone scale down the tallest mountain the world. I has nothing to do with being a strong leader or more experienced.

I think Rob was so exhausted from trying to haul Doug AND himself down with no oxygen left, that when he stopped to rest he started freezing and became so frost bitten that he just couldnt move anymore.
