Saddest Part Of The Film?

For me it was when Doug fell to his death, never having gotten to the top. I couldn't but feel his obsession with it was so misplaced. He talked about how you shouldn't give up on the chance to see such beauty and majesty, etc. Really? There are plenty of others beautiful and majestic places in the world to see that don't require risking your health and life.

Also the way it happened, visually, was just so heartbreaking and......eerie. They shot the moment from a distance, so he looked small against the vast backdrop as he struggled along, and then, without a sound, he just.....fell. It was symbolic of the whole endeavor to me.

Doug did make it to the top.

Indeed. It's implied that it's *because* Doug convinced Rob to take him to the summit (thus delaying their descent by several hours and getting them trapped in the storm) that Rob, Doug and Andy died.

I think part of the reason for the way it was filmed is because no one really knows how Doug died. Doug and Rob were together, and Rob said on the radio that "Doug's gone". Did he fall? Get confused and cut the rope? Give up and jump? Rob died before he could tell anyone and Diug's body has never been found. I thought the film handled it as tastefully as they could, and didn't presume to provide an answer. The mystery is part of the tragedy.
