Miscast Roles...

The casting was very good overall, but there are two glaring miscasts.

Josh Brolin as Beck Weathers. I've seen interviews with the Real Beck Weathers, and he looks nothing like Brolin and his mannerisms and overall persona are very different, as well.

Jake Gylenhaal as Scott Fisher. Again, they look nothing alike. Scott Fischer was blonde.

I believe these actors were cast in this film for some needed star power in a film with a lot of obscure actors.

Seeing as the climbers aren't famous, there isn't even an iota of a reason why actors would need to get down their exact mannerisms because it's not like it's going to be really distracting to the general audience. They took some completely justifiable artistic liberties, so calm yourself down.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

I agree that Gylenhaal was a poor Scott Fischer, but less because of his looks than due to the way the character was written, which was an abomination. If relatives of the deceased could sue for libel/slander, the screenplay writer would have been sued by Fischer's family, as the insinuations it made about him bordered on criminality. Fischer was not a drinker, he was very safety-oriented, quite dedicated to the well-being of his clients, and highly respected for his skills and achievements in high-altitude climbing.

Another thread has cited the opinion of Fischer's widow, who turned down a fair bit of money offered her to participate in the making of the film (maybe she saw the script first, LOL). There hasn't exactly been a chorus of praise from those involved in the 1996 expeditions, either. The silence is deafening, and what commentary there is (from Krakauer, for instance) is "praise with faint dam*s."

Many characters were undeveloped, of necessity I suppose, but overall, I found the movie to be a disappointment. An OK movie, but nothing I will want to watch again.

OTOH, the Rob Hall character was very well done.Kudos to the filmmakers for that. I liked the touch of showing his real-life daughter at the end.

Excellent point about the underdeveloped characters. Firstly, it should be acknowledged that this was a very difficult film to make. There were so many people who played a role in the story, as well as widely varying narratives as to what really happened.

But I think they could have done better by developing some of the key individuals a bit better. The second half of the film takes place after they summit, when things went bad. This part of the film could have been shortened by 10 minutes or so.

That time could go to show us exactly who Sandy Hill Pittman was. It could go to some development of Scott Fischer, beyond just the "chill dude" we see. Maybe Neal Beidleman, a critical player in the entire affair, could get some background.

I give the film a B-, taking into account the high degree of difficulty. I suppose, one could ask if this film really needed to be made at all, considering how well the story has been documented over the years.

I still contend that Brolin and Gylenhall were cast purely for some name recognition.

Agreed Beck was a bearded man who was a bit fatter than brolin.
Also Peach was meant to have a more chubbier neck with no wrinkles

When in doubt **** off

I saw pictures of Beck but I didn't really have a problem with Brolin's casting. I don't care about the looks so much as about the character and portrayal. That said I can see why people had a problem with Fischer's portrayal. I don't see it as even being JG's fault. He played Fischer as written, I assume, but he was written unfairly.

Its a shame how bad they portrayed him, doesnt make much sense why they would get mostly everything else right, almost ruin the movie with jake gyllenthals almost laughable portrayal.
