Chinese Brother = New York Accent vs Chinese Sister = Pidgin English

What was the explanation for the Chinese military brother having a perfect New York accent (having just studied maybe six years at MIT tops) while the sister can barely speak English.

Didn't make any sense to me and took away from the movie. Seemed unrealistc.

Did the movie mean to have the brother lived and studied in the USA whereas the sister not, hence the different accents? I don't recall they said she also studied in the USA, but I might be wrong.

I just know he studied at MIT but it's extremely rare for some foreign guy who spent some time in college or post grad to have a flawless New York accent. (The real actor who played the brother was born and grew up in NY). More realistic is the brother was born or came to the US when he was around 5 or 6 and stayed in the US the whole time.

But that's problematic because that wouldn't explain why he was suddenly in the Chinese army and it also doesn't explain why the sister can only speak pidgin English unless the brother and sister were separated at around 5 or 6 years old with her staying in China.

I know this is not a big issure and I'm being pedantic, but after watching the movie again. It tries to partially explain the difference in their accents.

CAROL BARRETT: ..."His father became China's Undersecretary for Trade to the UN. He (Chen)came with to New York,- Bronx High School of Science, MIT. His sister's a network engineer in the private sector."

HENRY: "She grow up in New York too?"

CAROL BARRET: "No."

This shows that Chen went to at least high school as well as college in New York. When Henry asks "she grow up in NY too", he's implying that Chen grew up in NY. However it does try to explain why his sister stayed in China. Nothing else about their family is ever explained, are their parents still alive and what is the age gap supposed to be between them etc.

Even going to high school it is pretty unrealistic to expect a flawless American accent especially for a guy.

He would have had to at least come over early in elementary school but that begs the question of why the sister was separated from him since early elementary school.

And they would honestly hardly know each other if they had been separated for that long.

Honestly, that did bother me. But got really bothered when one or two of the other Chinese police officers also spoke perfect English. Think one was the one the got shot behind the railway cars and the other was watching the Ukrainian mobster and someone gave him a bottle of water. Were they all raised in the US?

reply

Two of the other Chinese police officers spoke perfect English.
Small spoiler: Both got killed, the officers I am talking about.

the flop that play the sister is a typical bimbo ,with wooden plank acting, even she speaks what ever language she still a sorry excuse for an actress.. its just sad she brings down the movie with her confuse and wooden acting.
