What happened to Adam? *spoilers*

Hello, I'm not entirely sure what actually happened to Adam in the end. Is he still in the hospital when Karl & Elise say goodbye at the end or..?

Also when they're talking about deaf and blind they're talking about Kieran, right?

Just not entirely sure I heard correctly...

reply

Adam is dead, Kieran pumped him full of morphine and he didn't survive. Elise says at the end he wouldn't have suffered.

And they say 'mute and blind' not deaf, but you are right that they are talking about Kieran.

reply

I heard that line about suffering but wasn't sure. Everything's clear now. Thanks!

reply

well I too am unsure of the ending.

is a single bullet supposed to have made him mute and blind ?

wouldn't that be a possible outcome from an extreme drug overdose instead ? so simply saying that he wouldn't have suffered as his brain was fried doesn't mean that he actually died. it could mean that he became brain dead instead.

it was a very weak ending as it simply wasn't clear what happened and it appeared to have been censored. as at the start it said that some scenes were supposed to be shocking which ones were they ?

reply

The bullet didn't make him mute but instead a reference to his refusal to speak to explain all that he had been responsible for.

No further reference was made to Adam scratching his initials into the wall however.

reply

So Adam dies.

What the heck was the actual point of the series? It was all to get revenge on the copper?

What about the cut in half politician?

I think the last episode seemed rushed and left a lot of untied ends

reply

Not sure I noticed any untied ends.

TT was always and forever only about revenge on Karl and taking his son away.

He also was trying to get his revenge on the law enforcement community--both French and English--which he felt had betrayed him. So the lead-up to Adam's death was his revenge on the cop establishment.

And putting the two halves of the women's bodies on either side of the French/English dividing line, he managed to bring into play both French AND English cops in order to humiliate both forces by running them ragged on misdirected crimes.

Because the only crime he really wanted to commit was taking Adam's life, which in the end he did.

So that's it--the ends I saw were tied up.

And TT managed to manipulate Karl and Elise right to the very end---by meeting Karl in a contrived location that had maximum CCTC camera coverage, so that if Karl shot him dead in revenge, Karl would lose his career also (final victory for TT, taking Karl's job away the way the Karl had taken HIS job away as a cop).

TT knew if Karl killed him execution style on those CCTV cameras, he'd go to prison.

Almost Game, Set, Match to TT.

What TT didn't account for was that Elise would have influence over Karl and talk him out of executing TT. And that was the final irony---TT did not anticipate the human connection that Karl and Elise would form by forcing the French and English cops to work together---and that personal connection allowed Elise to talk Karl out of killing him.

So TT failed in his suicide by cop mission. He didn't see that one coming!

I agree with you that all the loose ends were tied, but I also agree with the poster you replied to, in the sense that the ending felt lacking. It was mostly the treatment of the final episode and not the story itself. The final few minutes felt rushed, like the Editor got bored and wrapped things up quickly.

All in all, though, I liked the series. I like UK TV series more than the US ones, cause they tend to be very crisp and focused and manage to tell the whole story, unlike the US ones that are stretched with mundane details and irrelevant sub-plots till the audience gets bored, at which point the studio/channel cancels it without a proper wrap-up episode.

I heard her say he's in the hospital , he didn't suffer at all . ( If he was dead why would she say he's in the hospital ? The second part i took to mean TT did not hurt the boy . ) Although in episode 9 I thought I heard Elise say ... " he's dead !"

reply

TT is in hospital. He is deaf and can only see shadows. About his crimes he is mute(keeping silent). Adam was killed for being the most annoying character in the series with enough injected morphine to kill him 7 times over. But in the end, TT couldn't bring himself to burn the body like he had planned.

reply

hospital morgue. she actually said 'he wouldn't have suffered at all', which is past tense indicating that Adam is dead. the fact that after that scene you see Karl in mourning on Adam's bed reading Adam's old books clearly means that Adam is dead.

reply

The hospital line is what is confusing people.

Adam is dead.
TT is alive, but injured. It is ambiguous as to whether the gunshot damaged his senses or the line is metaphorical.

The "Adam is in the hospital" line is about Elise trying to tell Karl what he wants to hear to stop him executing TT. As we know that her autism means she struggles with emotions and telling anything other than absolute facts/truths.

Adam probably was in the hospital- in the morgue. She said that as it was something that was in fact true whilst still slightly deceptive.

Not sure how people can have watched nearly 10 hours of this programme and not caught on to how the finale would use the relationship between Elise and Karl and touch on her notions of truth and empathy, why would they build on it in every episode and then have her not have to lie to him at the end...

reply

Exactly. Elise lies to Karl for convince him not to kill TT. That scene is the echo about their argument after meeting the mother of Sophie Campbell when Elise doesn't understand Karl point of view about saying they will find the girl (true or not). Elise lies about Adam but for once speaks with her heart and not with her brain.

gaby!

I finished The Tunnel and it was awesome.

The dl my friend gave me had them all in one file and a couple episodes were out of sequence! It confused me but when I figured it out it all made sense.

What's next for our boy Stephen?

Hey ! How you doooooin' ? So glad you finally saw it ! You really see his personality in this show. He is filming the second season now and I believe it will be on Sky in January 2016 ? Not sure. That's all I know and he may be in a play in November at the National Theatre but that isn't confirmed yet. I wish he would film more movies.

All is well at home right now. And trying to get back to enjoying the summer and waves again.

Once I watched this show, I put it right in my dvd player and watched it again. There were things I missed viewing it the first time and noticed on the second time around. So good to hear from ya. Next , if you haven't seen it, how about The Greatest Game Ever Played. Talk about making golf sexy ! Yikes ! 
