Question about a character and what he's doing

I'm watching the series on PBS here in the States and I'm trying to figure out a story. Episode 2 was on last night and there's a guy who took a woman and her son to some farmhouse. Who is this guy and for that matter, who is the woman and why is she in hiding? If none of my questions have been revealed yet just let me know but I feel as if I'm missing something. Thank you.

All is later revealed as to his motivation. At that juncture, he is a landlord trying to help the vulnerable.

Perfect. Thank you for responding.

There are 2 1/2 yrs between season 1 and season 2. Is this typical of British shows? If not, anyone know what took so long?

It's not 100% typical, but not completely out of the ordinary either, since most British series are basically one-offs and therefore wrapped up as the season ends. One reason could be a S2 was never planned or envisioned (since the arc of S1 was complete) and therefore no plotline had been developed, no script had been written, and the actors were involved in other projects. Stephen Dillane, for instance, had been heavily involved in Game of Thrones. Also, since this was a British/French production, it was highly unlikely to happen again, as such co-productions, in two completely different languages and completely different countries, take years to produce -- and in fact this bilingual production was a first for British television.

Thanks for the explanation.

Stephen Beaumont runs a hostel for failed asylum seekers and takes in Colombian-born Veronica. He also tries to protect Veronica from a violent pimp, which is why he hid her in the country. The violent pimp is a friend of his drug-addict sister's, which causes further problems.

That storyline is a red herring meant to make us think Beaumont is TT.
