three major draws of the franchise

Besides the obvious of its general whodunit meta social commentary and the fun of watching Ghost Face kill.

1: Gale always and Sidney always-minus once returning, the continuity of characters and story.

2: They haven't messed with the continuity, ie ignored any of the sequels. While they're still fun, pretty much every other big and comparably long-running horror franchise has.

3: They haven't gone supernatural yet. While they're still fun, pretty much every other big and comparably long-running horror franchise has, even if they didn't begin that way.

Numbers 2 and 3 are why I don't want either Dewey or Stu to return. Dewey's death hurt because it was supposed to. And Stu, that's stupid, he's dead, get over it, I don't know how that became such a thing anyway. What, he's secretly in prison or alive and being protected under an assumed identity, or in his parents' basement? For this long? Ridiculous. Does he as the killer have more rights than Sidney or something? And I hear about him coming back for revenge. Revenge for what exactly? He wasn't the wronged party in any way. Just crazy enough to think he is maybe I suppose. And the nods to his possible survival within the movies, people need to quit taking those so seriously, those were just winks meant to play with the audience and acknowledge they know those rumors exist, that's all

Time for a new Jaws. With the shark attacks all over the place recently it would doubly good.

Yep, I'd agree with all of those. The only slight play with continuity I can think of was the return of Kirby Reed, who we all assumed had died (which of course she had until they decided to bring her back, when it turned out she had - died but was resuscitated).

I would disagree with you on that. Wes Craven made note in a few interviews and even on the commentary that "Well, we never really see her die, do we?" And I think he even said that it was his intent to bring her back. However, it was also said that the original/his plan for 5 was to include an alive Jill at college, having gotten away with it, and there being a new Ghost Face who knows what she did. So maybe that would've been Kirby? Interesting to ponder. Though Jill definitely seems much more dead. Plus the other four in the room would've needed to be dead for her to get away with it. Even without getting the 5 and 6 we did, it'd be hard to retcon enough to have Jill still alive. If they could manage that, then I guess they could figure out a way to bring Stu back too. But even before the 5 and 6 we got, which I guess you can count as fan-fic if you want, as Sam does in 5, I never included Kirby in my personal body count.

Craven may have said that, but I don't remember anything in 4 itself to point to it. And my guess would be that many people who saw Kirby return in 6 hadn't seen those interviews. As far as they were concerned she was dead.

There are two things. When we last see her, she's still moving, and I think we can hear her gasping as Charlie skulks away. Secondly, when Sidney comes back from searching for Jill, she's at the top of the stairs, and there's a creak from downstairs. She suspects it's Kirby enough to call out her name. Quite possibly it was Kirby opening the door, or crawling on the floor, but too weak to respond. After all, she did technically die for four minutes, so she wasn't really actively alive at this point, she was definitely bleeding out. Back in the days when 4 was the new one, it was debated on the imdb boards if she was alive or not. But those are my final points, and being able to debate it is part of the fun, so we'll just agree to disagree :)
