The Great Disappointment

I know the show mostly focuses on the aftermath of the inexplicable and simultaneous disappearance of 140 million people and how it affected those people who are left behind. What if the reason for why these people might have disappeared was anything other then God or divinely inspired? What if these people where not rapture up and just disappear?

That seems to be the point of the show: they do not know what happened and are exploring all varieties of reasons including having government agents go around and quiz everyone about the missing to try and determine a link.

We have seen all sorts of theories ranging from God, to aliens, to the devil (that person was a government researcher). That is the point of the show, nobody knows, on some level everyone is looking for answers, but there are no answers to be found on earth. So they just keep moving on with their lives, some better than others.

I think it is most likely a natural phenomenon, but one beyond our understanding of physics. Just as the woman at the beginning of season 2 has no way of explaining the earthquake and her family's cave collapsing, the characters have no way if explaining the sudden departure. The two events are even linked in season 2 during International Assassin, when Patty's double says of the sudden departure"the cave collapsed."
