This show is absolutely beautiful. Embrace mystery and give it a chance.
Do not overlook The Leftovers. Please do not allow your intelligence to be insulted by accepting the interpretations of those who don't understand it.
This show is not about answers. It's about humankind struggling to find a sense of purpose in the wake of inexplicable disaster on a biblical scale. It's really that simple. I am genuinely baffled by how few people can see that and clamor for "answers". The most common complaints I hear about this show are, essentially, "lack of closure" and "it doesn't make any sense." For those who didn't notice: The aftermath of the unknown is literally the entire f'ing point of the show.
You aren't supposed to understand any more than the characters do; you're just supposed to ride the roller coaster and explore the hypotheticals of human nature in a scenario that defies all science and religion as we know it. For a show that people complain to be nonsensical, I'm hard-pressed to cite a more poignant depiction of the power and downfalls of faith.
My bottom line: I think it is impossible to like this show if you're stupid. Please don't take that statement to mean "if you don't like this show you're stupid", because that's not at all what I'm trying to say. My point is that virtually every argument I've seen denouncing The Leftovers has been based on obvious viewer misinterpretation. Most of the questions posted on this board have clear and obvious answers that people simply misunderstood or missed completely
For those who are on the fence and reading through the forums: Do not deprive yourself of this brilliant show based on the opinions of those who need to be spoon-fed their art. I'm open to legitimate discrepancies, but so far I have yet to see one.
