Stephen King influence?

A friend of mine was quick to point out that this had Stephen King type tropes in it. And I think she was right about that. It's something that crops up throughout the show, especially I thought, at the end of Season 2 when Nora has her baby taken by the random woman telling her it wasn't her baby. Just so random, so weird, kind of horrifying and funny, and very much in the vein of Stephen King.

What do you guys think, is he ghost writing this show?

reply

Stephen King is never as ambiguous as this show is. His stories are rich but simple. Lindelof was probably inspired by King (everyone nowadays is). So there are certainly elements that remind of something Kingesque.

If you want something in the vain of King, see Stranger Things.

I did not think that Stranger Things was particularly in the vein of Stephen King. For me it is basically The Goonies, Super Mario, Short Circuit, Legend, Never Ending Story, and ET.

reply

Seriously? The main inspiration for Stranger Things was Stephen King's "IT" and "Firestarter". Even the writers said so. The font of the title sequence is directly taken from every King book. It's even made by the same person who used the font for King books. You can't be serious dude...

reply

The Duffer Bros made Stranger Things because they were turned down for the It movie. The whole thing screams Stephen King

The literary world existed before Stephen King.

The horror movie genre existed before Stephen King.

The "tropes" you're talking about are not "Stephen King tropes" since they existed before Stephen King was born.

Stephen King is one of the world's most prolific derivative writers out there. I've read enough of his work & the work of others to be an expert.
