Iam assuming they have already finished filming it. So why make us wait all the way until april, no one will even remember the show existed and only 8 episodes that is so sad..

If the writers want it to be apart of the emmy season that makes sense. But i dont think theres 2 years between each season wasnt leftovers season 2 released in 2015. I know it takes alot more than just filming but it seems normal shows have a season out each year if they do well. I remember Lost skipping a year once though..

In its final and abbreviated season, I don't think Emmy season is first in HBO's mind when scheduling. The creators might care but they don't have a say in that.
Big Little Lies pushed the The Leftovers into Spring. And GofT will now air later in 17 than it did in 16. Westworld is returning in 2018. Cable shows are not as tethered to yearly seasons as broadcast tv.
If I remember right, Lost didn't skip a year. Season four was released with a major delay due to a of a strike of the writers.

They wanted it to take place of game of thrones and make a big emmys push in its final season since it's been egregiously snubbed the last 2 years. I wish it was 10 episodes instead of 8 though, I always want a little more.
