The whispered warning on the limbo bridge
So up to that point, Garvey was pretty dead set on putting little patti in the well as soon as he interpreted what to do. Then he was given a strange choice to continue across the bridge, or hang himself off the side, which honestly was a bit of heavy handed symbolism to say the least, but then when he says he wants to continue to put patti in the well, the gatekeeper whispers something in Garvey's ear that makes him "well up". What do you think he said? That killing patti here would be killing her forever? Sending her to hell? And if that was the case, isn't that was he wanted anyway? I may be thinking about this too laterally.
