Noah's Descent

This third season of "The Affair" started even in more stranger time and place; I was still trying to catch up what happened after Noah's outburst in court but then I find we are almost 3 years into future at a funeral of Noah's father. What I find different in this episode was the change in Noah; it was this sad scared and almost empty shell. It's interesting how this character risked everything like his marriage, kids, career all in the name of love/lust for a woman who apparently is also no longer in his life either. He wrote one book got his 15 minutes of fame, with all the BS that came with it, then out of whatever sense of guilt or redemption to confesses to a murder crime he didn't commit to go to prison and come out broken like a wounded lost animal with probably some gruesome memory that is haunting him. This is truly Noah's descent. Some may say he deserves what he gets but Noah is just another human who made mistakes by making bad choices and going after his desires and lost hopes. This character also reminds me of another, Walter White from "Braking Bad", because both Noah and Walter were about the same age, both had families and yet both wanted something they didn't have and went to great risks in attaining them and then losing everything.

being locked up would have psychological damage to anyone. You really have to buy into the fact that he was so 'in love' with Alison that he threw away his wife and four children. I saw lust, but I guess that many people mistake this for love? He hasn't been a very sympathetic character in my opinion. The whole thing took a very unbelievable turn when he 'confessed' to a murder that no one committed. Completely accidental, based on Scotty's aggression. Hard to get past that.

Lust alone would not be a sufficient explanation, but simultaneously being neutered by all three of the Butlers would be enough to drive even the most stable man over the edge. Noah is just one of the few who stepped out of his life of quiet desperation. He also forgot the first rule, which is, women who have affairs with married men are nutz and should never be seriously considered as wife material. Check the stats, these second marriages are significantly shorter than the first.

the women are 'nutz,' but not the men? men who cheat are good choices for husbands?

Agreed, what a dumb thing to say

I have heard this exact thing from other married couples and I agree there is a lot of truth in that, but married Men are just as nutz to even embark on having an affair. Noah could have walked away from Alison so many times; the signs about Alison being kind of damaged and maybe "nutz" were right in front of him but he just refused to see them; that's why I called it Love/Lust because their relationship was more sexual. Thanks for a great post.

I have heard a theory that men are usually attracted to crazy women. I guess they are more exciting, but look what you get!

Maybe if that particular marriage was born of our cheating but I'm sure most second marriages last longer.
