Did anyone like this season? I did

I enjoyed watching this season. I did not enjoy the Gunther, is he or isn't he bit, but enjoyed the rest.

I remember reading an interview with Sarah Treem, where she said something along the lines of, that she believed, we all told ourselves stories about who we think we are, then life threw things with us that challenged that belief. I completely agree with that.

I think she writes about the many complexities of our psyche very well. You can see all of the characters this season grappling with facing who they really are. Noah realising when he spoke to Whitney by the river that he was not the good father and husband that he thought he was. Helen realising that she is not the wholesome woman that she thought, she is capable of killing someone and allowing Noah to take the blame. Also realising that she never really knew or tried to know her husband.

Allison coming to terms with the reasons why she was drawn to Noah. Cole realising that even though he was trying to create this 'perfect' life with Louisa, he still loved Allison.

There are parts of the story that are unrealistic, for instance, being able to find a flight back to New York, at short notice on Christmas Eve etc., but it is after all just a tv show. I personally find the nuances of the human psyche very realistic.

Wow. You came to IMDb JUST to post this -- your very first post. Thanks SO MUCH! Fantastic! Don't be a stranger, now, okay?

Yes, I did join just to post this. I enjoy the show. Is this a problem for you?

Are you one of those people who obsesses over whether someone uses more than one imdb account? Why? Who cares?

reply

I agree but I did think they left too many loose ends. And at time I thought they made the characters too ambiguous if that makes sense.

this season was a pleasant surprise as I never heard of this show before. Hope Sarah continues on with what she's trying to do with this show, looking forward to season 4.

You haven't followed this show for two seasons. You've only binge-watched the first two seasons and then caught up watching S3. That's a very different experience than watching the two prior seasons in real time, reflecting on what happened, and then trying to make sense of it all in S3.

You may come to view the show differently after you've had time to reflect on the earlier seasons -- or not. IMO the finale was very weak and rushed, and an unfortunate contrast to the previous 2 seasons, as well as in particular episode 09, which was amazing.

haven't seen season 1 or 2 though, cause I don't watch old stuff, just read the boards if I have to. Good shows and seasons can stand alone on their own as this season did

As chapters, or in this case several chapters, in a novel should in ways be able to stand on their own, they also should build on one another, so it's not at all insignificant to miss several chapters in a novel and still be able to get the gist and subtlety of it. That's why there are prior chapters/episodes. They shouldn't be throw-aways, or what's the point of them?

reply

I'll watch them eventually, but until then I'm enjoying this show through that "very different experience" haha

You and I watch shows very differently.

If it's a show that doesn't rely on subtly and character development -- i.e., any network show, and even most cable shows -- then sure, because it doesn't much matter in the long run. But for me, I quickly lose interest in that type of show.

To each their own, eh? :)

reply

haha I watch shows exactly the way you do, but sometimes it's fun to watch it this way too.

Totally agree. It's good to see someone go into such depth of character.

I enjoyed it a lot. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but for me that's a good thing. To be honest, it was an improvement on the 'who killed Scotty' business...EVERYBODY killed Scotty! If they were trying to make a point with that, they didn't have to bash us over the head so hard with it. A felt a little bit the same way about the Gunther reveal, but oh well, he was good in the role.

So yeah, I felt there were aspects of the show that left a bit to be desired, but overall, it was still compelling. It was still the show I watched immediately after it recorded, and that's a rarity for me.

So yes, I liked it. Lots of food for thought and that will always keep me engaged in a story, no matter which way it twists and turns.
