Farewell My Digital Friends

To say this is B.S. is an immeasurable understatement. WTAF, I cannot limit my impressions of TVs and movies to 140 characters. Such limitation of critical thinking is what has propelled the world to absolutist, binary thinking and attitudes.

Farewell my digital friends. This has been such a great place for thoughtful, respectful sharing of perspectives on the art of visual medium.

Respect and regards, y'all!

reply

I agree. I don't change who I am with the anonymity but I don't want my friends/ family to know what a complete nerd I am. Very disappointed this site is ending the message boards. Very, very dumb.

reply

This is going to be the future. The less gathering places the better controlled they can be by big brother. It is absolutely disgusting beyond words. Hello 1984...

Farewell to all as well. It was fun while it lasted.

reply

I agree...I don't buy that this is about rampant uptick negative or hostile posts. This is something else: Cost savings and marketing and the collection and sale of metadata algorithmic analyses. Other social media sites allow companies to track user trends, and overall comment disposition (favorable, unfavorable, neutral) and prevalent attitudes or reactions. Current IMDB message boards do not allow for these kinds of data and analyses.

reply

Call me cynical...but the media industry is big business. Huge business, really. And I think the opinions voiced here that run contrary to the MSM machine will simply no longer be tolerated. IMDb has often times reflected the mainstream shills, and sometimes it's represented opposition to such brainwashing. But it's their sandbox, and they're clearly picking up their marbles and going home.

Oh bridget I will miss you too. What a pleasure indeed. With whom can I now reminisce about my favorite Block Island episodes? This is so sad.

I am going to keep this name in case I ever sign up elsewhere and who knows maybe the message boards will come back.

reply

well one thing I assure you that when I watch the Block Island episode from season one (and I'm sure over the years it will be many, many times, I will always think of you fondly. I have been going through and taking screen shots of certain discussions so I can remember them in the future.

I too will always keep my board name. I wish "Mad" from seasons one and two stops by so I can say goodbye. I hope my friend JumboShrimp stops by also.

And I quote the line from one of my favorite old movies (Tea & Sympathy}with Deborah Kerr:
"Years from now when you talk about this - and you will - be kind."
Let's think fondly of each other and the great conversations and such fun that we had. I shall miss you!

reply

Hey Bridge ! Thank you for remembering me, i remember you too and our discussions about our beloved season 1 :) whenever I read your posts it's like I read something I wrote! We think alike.

It's sad that IMDB decided to cancel the message board, I really enjoyed reading the posts about my favorite shows.
Hopefully they will change their mind :)

reply

Mad...where have you been? I'm so glad you wrote so I could say good-bye to yuu. I could never forget you!

I'm so sad about IMDB, but isn't it nice to know that we made friends from all over the world over a mutual TV show. Be well my friend.

I guess it is, yes. In fact I'm sure it is, but all the same I feel very sad about the people I'm unlikely to meet up with again. Oh well.

reply

That's very nice of you, I'll never forget you too :)
I've been a bit MIA, I try to read the posts here, As always i enjoy your posts very much:)
This season was very disappointing IMO, it was completely different, and not in a good way. The season finale was disappointing too, but I liked the Last scene. The only episode I enjoyed was when Noah and Alison were together again, it was very special as always.

I hope to "see" you around again Bridge ! All the best my friend :)

Mega-dittos to you and the rest on this here show board and others on IMDB. Y'll with some very, very limited exceptions have been some of the most thoughtful, insightful, respectful, intelligent, and articulate group of entertainment connoisseurs.

I appreciate and respect the input and analyses you all have provided over my brief time on IMDB. I concur with Smelling Salt that this seems to be shifting towards mediums that are more measurable for commercial (sales & marketing) purposes.

I heartily agree. This board and the Mad Men board were exceptional, for all of the above reasons.

Are you going to Previously TV boards? I am. I've read it occasionally and found the posters to be very similar to those on this board. Never registered, only read, but I will be registering.

Farewell to the many people here whose posts I've very much enjoyed, whether we agreed on not. I've also appreciated the laughs, such as SmellingSalt's The Affair-themed poetry :)

reply

Someone sent me over to the Previously TV boards today and they were interesting and not too unlike what I've read on these boards. Worth checking out since we are losing this posting zone.

reply

Catbookss, I didn't always agree with you, but that's okay, that's what makes us different. But I always respected your and your very intelligent point of view. You were a great asset at this board. Sorry I didn't get to know you better.

All the best,
Bridget

reply

Hi Bridget. The feeling's mutual, on all of the above.

I liked running into you, and others, on other boards -- Baron, Sluggr, and I'm sure I'm forgetting others. It was fun to see familiar names. It really has been a community, like a town, where it's small enough that you'll run into familiar faces, be happy to see them and chat, but big enough so you see new faces as well and get to know them.

All the best to you too,

Cat

Catbooks et al

I most certainly hope to bump in to you all elsewhere. The great thing about the invisibility and anonymity that a message board like this afforded was that we shared common interest and great insights with people's hearts and minds regardless their externals--i.e., their physical qualities, where they live, what they do for a living, whether they are wealthy or just scraping by, what their "political" affiliations, etc.

It was an honor and pleasure sitting around a digital dinner table having that unending, human conversation about what it is that makes us who and what we truly are underneath all that usually separates, divides and so often isolates us. The world suffers from a strange alienation despite there being 7.49 billion people on this earth. It's the greatest irony that many people live quiet, lonely lives and find, sometime even search for reasons, to hide themselves from others.

Here, I can let out my inner nerd, let him roam free and abashed. Here is where I find the long, green fields of tall grass under the soon to be setting sun, where the sound of birds punctuate the backdrop of the slowly rolling clouds and the whispering wind.

The intelligence and decency shown by many on this board and others heartens me when there is so much "out there" that would seem to persuade me to the contrary.

Beautifully said :)

Cotton-mouth, are you coming over to another site?

reply

Cotton mouth, between "The Affair" and Banshee, even if it might not always have seemed like it, I have the greatest respect for you, and especially for that brilliant mind of yours. You seem like such a nice person. I hope life treats you well!! I will miss your posts so much. I didn't always agree with them, but damn, I wish I had a command of the English language and so many of your insights that just come like second nature to you. They were always a great read,

Wow, I'm starting to tear up. So many people here are the "usual suspects" that I would turn in to see every Sunday night.

If anyone ever gave a thought that many of us didn't care about each other, at least because of today, I feel good that I was able to tell those of you that I like and respect that you did impact my life in such a good way. Thank you so much for te wonderful memories.

Bridget,

You have a second career as an abridged (get it?) encyclopedia of on Television shows waiting for you IF you ever tire of your day job. Your complete timeline synopses have always been a source of great interest, and sometimes, course correction.

When I posted, in response to Catbooks, that there are posters here who give me optimism about humanity when watching TV news makes be feel exactly the opposite, I include your posts among them. Your unabashed enthusiasm and general positive regard for the open, thoughtful exchanges that so readily occur on IMDB generally and this board specifically (and Banshee), is so obvious and infectious. That's right, I said you're spreading somethin' ...good!

reply

Awww..you're such a sweetie. (haha--yes I got "abridged")

I agree--Sarah Treem should have hired me to be the head of continuity. I would have straightened out that time-line sh!t out in a nano-second (or second best--a movie nit-picker site)

You're making me blush. High praise from one of my most respected fellow posters who most of the time was able to articulate what my addled brain could not..thank you from the bottom of my heart. 

This is such *beep* I'm really sad about this :-(

I love this board, it's been great since The Affair began, and I have always loved coming onto imdb to check on theories, opinions and thoughts about movies I had just seen and confront my opinions with other people's.

If they think they'll have the same amount of active users on facebook or twitter they really are stupid.

Anyway, it's been great thinking and discussing The Affair with you, really. Thank you, guys.

reply

Same reason I come here! Ughhh and no they're wrong it won't be the same on fb or Twitter. I don't have FB but I do have twitter but it's private so I won't be using imdb there

YES!

It greatly enhances my movie and TV viewing to know I could go check the boards and see if I'd missed some detail and was confused, or just to talk over what I'd seen, or even if I didn't post, reading others' opinions. I loved the exchanges, and with many shows (especially this one), one of the best parts was coming here after an episode to read what everyone else thought.

There is no way people are going to start following them on Twitter or Facebook and having real discussions. What they don't realize, and perhaps don't even care about, is a lot of users do come here for the message boards. I come virtually every day. Without the message boards, why come here? To look up the occasional movie title and cast list? There are other sites where you can do that.

I think they're going to lose a lot of traffic, and have generated a lot of ill will by this move.

reply

Where do I go? I don't use Fb or Twitter! I read IMDB before and after watching anything... I enjoy having serious discussions with regular people like me... IMDB could have atleast done a user poll on this new move before making a decision.

reply

I'm going to really miss these boards. Posting on FB or Twitter will not be anything like the interaction these boards provide. I come here after watching almost anything on TV, just to read other opinions and often catch things that I have missed or just not thought about.

reply

Go to the Previously TV boards. That's where I'll be. Good group of people -- very similar to the posters on this board.

I don't use FB or Twitter either. Terrible decision on the part of IMDb, and certainly not enough notice given.

reply

Thank you!

I will check it out. I hope to see all of you there :-)

reply

I hope to see you and everyone else there :)

reply

Thank you catbookss. i have bookmarked the link. I don't think there's every going to be a place that I will post at again, but at least there is an alternative to READ the posts--which I love to do so much. There have been times I have spent hours and hours here. Not posting, but just reading.

You know if you are on IMDB enough you see the same people again and again. I had not posted since the end of May after Banshee ended and then started again a couple of months ago. I can't believe it's over.

I hate FB (hardly ever use it), no Twitter for me (unless it's to read Sarah Treem, who by the way posted today she has read the tweets about the finale and is "digesting" them..she better take some pepto bismol while she's at it). 

Remember us, for we too have lived, loved and laughed

reply

You're welcome, Bridget :)

Maybe between Previously TV and the other site SweetTea posted, things will come together again in another community. There are lots of people on IMDb who feel the same way we do. And you know what they say: nature abhors a vacuum.

I'm sorry you hadn't been here since May, only to come back and shortly find out IMDb is unceremoniously throwing all of us out, with only a couple weeks' notice.

I thought I'd be able to come here for years, meet up with the same people, meet new people, and discuss not only my older favorite shows (which I so much enjoyed), but new ones as well.

I hate FB too, to the point where I don't even have a FB account. I signed up early for Twitter, to just have fun and keep in touch with people I actually knew in a fun way (140 characters and all). But all too soon it became something entirely different, and I never check into my Twitter account. In fact, I no longer even remember the password or which email account I used, and don't care.

(unless it's to read Sarah Treem, who by the way posted today she has read the tweets about the finale and is "digesting" them..she better take some pepto bismol while she's at it).

 Yeah, she'd best have an extra large bottle of Pepto Bismol at hand while digesting comments about her finale.

There's Reddit I haven't used it but it's another forum for tv shows and movies. I doubt I'll like it as much as this tho
