I've been through this before, with the closure of forums that were very meaningful to a lot of people.
The bad thing is that people will split off into a number of forums, so it'll never be the same as it was here. At this point I've come to find cable TV shows far more interesting and wanting to discuss them, than I do films. TV shows have come into their own and taken advantage of the length of time they have to develop characters and plots, which simply isn't possible in the film format of 1.5 or more hours.
All the same, I also enjoy film -- old or new -- and the accompanying discussions, except for the new releases at the time, which commonly encourage trolls and spammers, merely due to the traffic of those boards and the attention they feel they can generate from it.
I'm going to PreviouslyTV.com. I've read the boards on a few shows that are my favorites for the past year or so, and while I've definitely preferred IMDb, I've found the posters to be intelligent and insightful -- very much like the most insightful and bright posters on this board, and a couple others.
That won't help me with films, but I suppose I could just go to Wikipedia or any of a number of sites that fill me in on plot lines and casting lists.
You're right, it will create a void for many of us, including me. Who knows, there may be a faint (very faint) possibility IMDb will change their minds, but I doubt it. It's all about the bottom line to them, communities and long-time contributors (of which I am not one, but greatly appreciate those who are, or were) be damned.
