Similar?

Im loving this dark humor, almost comedy/horror. i don't know many UK shows or cant find a good list of them,so can anyone tell me shows similar to this one?

thanks in advance :)

reply

Well you might want to start(if you haven't already) with the two previous Pemberton/Sheersmith shows, 'The League of Gentlemen' and 'Psychoville'. These shows are abit different than 'Inside no. 9' but still contain much of the duo's trademark comedy/horror style and approach. You might also want to look into 'Garth Meringues Darkplace'. That one is quite silly, but still a funny little horror/comedy themed show.

I'll list any others that might also come to mind as I'm sure there are more of them out there.

thank you :) those are on my watchlist now. i think i saw some random episode of one of those on TV somewhere because i remember those guys. i think it was The League of Gentlemen. has for Inside Nº9 i do hope it doesn't end on episode 6....

No problem. And according to Wikipedia both Steve and Reece have said that the series has been renewed for a 2nd season and that they are planning to start shooting it this autumn. I certainly hope it's true because I would love to have at least another season of 'Inside No. 9' for sure!

made an Utopia marathon last night,it was amazing! not really the same genre, but besides Luther and orphan black i´m "new" to UK shows.

reply

Is Orphan Black a Canada show?
Black Mirror is similar to this,I think.Other than that,Black Mirror is also a very successful show.
Misfits is strongly recommended too,but it's not similar with this though.

Psychoville is great. A taut story that is comically dark. General premise is a group of seemingly unrelated strangers— including a clown missing a hand and a serial killed obsessed young man who lives with his mother— receive cryptic blackmail letters leading to a greater mystery.

I also really am into this show and can recomend you Psychoville from the same duo (I'm yet to see The league of Gentlemen), aswell as Garth Marenghi's Dark Place as someone mentioned before. I also think Snuff Box would be good. On a similar style but without much comedy is Black Mirror which is made of single storylines that are for most of them perfectly written/executed. Also, on an unrelated note, there are a few british comedy shows that you should take a look at IMO, including The IT crowd, Peep Show and Green Wing. :)

Snuff Box was a great show! It's just too bad there was only a single season of the show. A second season of it would've definitely been more than welcome!

On top of everyone else's great replies to the OP (all Steve and Rece's stuff is great anyway) I might add Toast Of London which just recently aired on Channel 4 and starred the always-funny Matt Berry from Snuff Box and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace which is it's obvious closest-call I'd say.
It's not neccesarily dark or macabre comedy but it does have those elements in the air and harks back to a style oft-visited by Steve and Reece and Mark Gattiss which is 70s/early 80s British TV and film; very theatrish, very (deliberately)hammy and very heightened sense of the absurd,
Also Dawn French did a sort-of similar sitcom called Murder Most Horrid in the 90s. And if you go a bit further back you have some Comic Strip Presents... episodes that were in a similar vein. Also a long-forgotten comedy from the same stable as the Comic Strip lot called Happy Families from the 80s which starred French & Saunders and Ade Edmonson and co.

I have to say this and I'm not sure why it hasn't been said yet - but - Tales of the Unexpected?

reply

That series was one of the inspirations for 'Inside No. 9'.

reply

I don't think anyone has mentioned it so give Nighty Night a go, its a bit different from what Steve and Reece do but its dark and very funny.
