Octavia as a grounder, seriously?

First of all, I haven't watched season 3 yet!
I started watching this show just two weeks ago and I made it up to the second to last episode of season 2, so I have a lil more catching up to do. My impressions are only based on the first two seasons, keep that in mind. -_-

Secondly: I love this show to bits! And I'm quite fond of Octavia.

But I had a hard time taking Octavia serious when she started to "become" a grounder. The romance between her and Linc I can understand. But when she started to put on grounder paint on her face and insist on fighting like them, I was like "lol, it's cute but I don't buy it".
Then when they march on to mount weather and the grounders shout battle cries, she joins going all out. It feels a bit cringe ish to me. I don't know how to explain. It's like a white guy trying to be a black gangsta rapper. "yo dawg!"
Makes you laugh. (yeayea, don't mention Eminem now, exception to the rule and he's got his own style and story)

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else feels the same towards Octavia of the sky people.

I feel even the makers of the show consider it a bit of a joke. I remember the scene where Octavia want's to rush out somewhere mid season 2 and Raven saying "hold on, Pocahontas". Hahahah! Had me in tears! Pocahontas! 

Above all, Octavia is damn cute! Including and thanks to her reckless "i don't think, I just feel and act accordingly" behavior.
IM IN LOVE WITH A GROUNDER, I WANNA BE A GROUNDER TOO! ROAAAAR!! WHERES MY SPEAR!! *talks grounder slang*

I suppose I accepted and didn't think much of it because she didn't really fit in on the Ark either, since she was hidden away for all of those years. She's just finally able to live free, and get to know herself. So, I guess- she likes the Grounder ways and gravitates towards them because the people on the Ark weren't exactly welcoming of her.

Either way, her transition has been awesome and I love the tough, ass-kicking Octavia. And yes, she is definitely much hotter as a Grounder while kicking ass!

Her story has always been centred around identity so i suppose as a viewer it's supposed to feel jarring when she's trying to fit in with the grounders. Without spoilers, she takes on a grounder identity even more in season 3 and I was pretty annoyed with that. Sometimes she thinks she knows more about their culture than they know themselves and I hope she finds a middle ground eventually.

Think about it from her perspective. She never fit in anywhere. "Her" culture was the one that got her mom killed because Octavia was born and forced her into a life under the floor. She desperately wanted something else, something free, and grounder culture represented that for her.

Until S3 this was one of the aspects that I LOVED about the show. I know a lot of people want to brush off how badly she was treated by the Ark. But you don't just forget the fact that your "so-called people" put a death sentence on you just because you were born.

When they found out she existed they killed her mother, put her in jail and were going to kill her all because she was born. So of course when she finally had freedom and love she was going to fully embrace it. I find it laughable when people on this board just ignore that history and act like Octavia is supposed to be loyal to the Ark.

One of the many things I despised in S3 is how she treated Clarke because Clarke actually WAS accepted by the Grounders and that seemed to make Octavia jealous. And now in S4 she's on a revenge kick killing Grounders when they had nothing to do with Lincoln's death. Like everyone else on the show, her character no longer makes any sense.

Might wanna consider using spoiler tags next time?

Like I said in the first post, I have not watched season 3 yet, so now a lot is spoiled including the death of an important character.

Spoiler tags are there for a reason!

I don't think she was jealous of Clarke at all. She held animosity towards Clarke because she hated Lexa. Lexa tried to kill Octavia (twice, TonDC and the attempted assassination afterwards) and she betrayed all of her people. She was mad that Clarke was seemingly putting all of her trust in Lexa when she had such a bad track record for them.

I'll throw spoiler tags up on here just in case, not sure where the OP is now in the show:

Octavia doesn't know about that assassination attempt though...right? Or the fact that Clarke saved her in that scenario.

Also, I wouldn't say Lexa tried to kill her at TonDC (you're talking about the bombing right?) She just didn't do anything to stop it. I think she was pretty mad that Clarke went along with that though, I always wished Clarke had found a way to get her out of town without letting on, similar to how she got Abby out.

And as far as Octavia as a grounder is concerned, I was all for it the first time I watched. I'm watching season one again right now and it is actually a little jarring how quickly she connects with Lincoln. She is really just a teenager trying to find somewhere she belongs though. She didn't belong on the Ark, so she's trying so hard to belong on the ground.

Actually I think you're right about Octavia not knowing about the assassination attempt. I can't remember her finding out. But yeah Octavia was really mad at Clarke (and rightfully so) for letting the bomb drop on her and the village. I think that was one of the reasons she felt animosity towards Lexa, on top of the betrayal and everything else that she did. I definitely never felt that it was jealousy that Octavia felt towards Clarke in any way. She had a lot of legitimate reasons to be upset with her and Lexa, who Clarke now appeared to be aligning herself with.

i felt the same as you. When first watching I really liked Octavia turning into a grounder, but when I rewatched her romance with Lincoln made no sense at the start. I also don't like how she seems to think that she knows more about grounder culture than him sometimes. It does make sense with her character though. She never really had a home so she's trying to find her own.

reply

I don't think she acts like she knows more about grounder culture than Lincoln, but I think she acts like she CARES more about it. Like he's doing something wrong by kind of assimilating himself into Ark culture, while she's doing the opposite and assimilating into grounder culture.

I like where Clarke, and even Kane to a lesser extent, are kind of positioned as someone who kind of takes on traits of both cultures, unlike Octavia who is letting herself disappear in that world somewhat.

I enjoy watching them pick up the language and blend in. Not gonna lie though, really looking forward to seeing Octavia rip people up in season 4!

Ya, the girl who is so clumsy she can't go for a walk in the woods without needing to be rescued, becomes a tough, martial arts and weapons expert in 3 months. She's so good she can take out grounders who have been training since birth... Yup, totally believed it...

Haha. I'm not even thinking about that.

Just the way she marched with the grounders shouting. Made me think about a bunch of football supporters shouting and one person in the middle looking left and right, then adjusting to what the rest does "oh, yea I'll do what they do! Blend in!" :p

But again, I don't mean to talk trash about the series or Octavia.

reply

I agree with you LOL! There're some things in this show that I just can't believe, I can't... one of them is Octavia becoming a Grounder "Elektra" in 3 months. I get that she's bitter towards the Arkers, she has an identity crisis of sorts and she falls in love with a Grounder but falling in love with the people who are attacking and killing her friends? Wanting to become one of them? Fighting like a strong an experienced warrior in just 3 months? That's too much to digest..

reply

Well she is a grounder pounder.
