Submarine

In anticipation for season 4, I rewatched all the old episodes. It is a great show!

In season 2, Bellamy is stealthing around mt. weather, and uses the phrase "it is like a submarine in here". My question is, how does he know what a submarine is?

He obviously grew up in space where the amount of ocean is very limited. We know they had a school subject called "earth skills", but would they really teach you about submarines (and what they look like on the inside) instead of more useful survival techniques, like say how to make fire or navigate with stars.

Last thing I can think off would be if any movies survived the apocalypse and went into space, then maybe he could have seen the inside of a submarine in a movie. But literally no one makes popculture references in this show, and every submarine movie would be 100+ years old, so I doubt it would have any entertainment value

there are holes in the writing. it's all action and adventure though, those types of shows are always going to have holes. it could easily be explained though if they wanted, like a book for instance, they did have schools.

I don't think this a hole...(not saying show has none, all shows have them)...there is a flashback scene in season 1 of Clarke, her dad, Wells, and Jaha watching a soccer match...and that obviously is a 100+ year old recording. It stands to reason they have movies and books stocked up on the Ark.

Bellamy could have easily seen a movie with a submarine in it. What else is there really to do on the Ark? I'd be watching ALL the movies and reading ALL the books available.

Speaking of submarines, they are pretty close to the coast, so it might be cool to actually incorporate a real one. Maybe Flokru has a sub.

You're right I wasn't even thinking about movies, but it's very likely that he watched one with a submarine in it.

They don't just have "Earth Skills" classes, so I was thinking that he probably learned about it in a history class or something. In interviews for season 4 Bob Morley was talking about how apart from Clarke, Bellamy was the top student on the Ark so of anyone he would know more about that stuff. Bellamy talks about mythology a lot because of the books he's read and I don't think it's that much of a stretch from that to reading history books.
