Anna Faris is DONE! She Will No Longer Be on the Show Anymore

CBS' comedy Mom will go into its eighth season without one of its two leads.

In a surprise move, Anna Faris is exiting the series she has starred in for seven years. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter her departure is not due to COVID-19 concerns; instead she wanted to pursue other opportunities.

Her role as Christy won't be recast, sources say, and her absence will be addressed in the show. It's not clear when Faris informed producers of her decision, but the writers weren't delayed as a result. Production on the Warner Bros. TV show, executive produced by Chuck Lorre, is slated to begin Sept. 14. CBS hasn't set a premiere date.

"The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career," said Faris. "I'm so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I'll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family."

Early seasons of the show revolved primarily around Faris' Christy and her mother, Allison Janney's Bonnie. The show has become more of an ensemble in recent years as Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall and more recent additions William Fichtner and Kirsten Johnston have had their roles grow. All are set to return for season eight.

The seventh season featured Christy continuing law school while going through a series of romantic misadventures.

"From the inception of Mom, Anna was the first and only choice for the role of Christy," said Warner Bros TV and Chuck Lorre Productions in a statement. "We are so proud of the stories we have been able to tell during Anna's seven years with us. We wish Anna all the best, and we thank her for her beautiful portrayal."

Lorre co-created Mom with Eddie Gorodetsky and Gemma Baker. Lorre, Nick Bakay, Baker and Warren Bell executive produce.

They don’t need her

I just recently started watching this show out of curiosity and it feels more like an ensemble show with the many different and very well rounded supporting characters. It seriously can last longer without Anna Faris but if she was smart she'd leave an opening to be willing to return to do certain episodes. In today's media competitive world you need every hot commodity at your disposal to keep your face familiar to the general audience. I'm not sure what other projects she thinks she has lined up with to keep her busy unless she's saved and invested and wants to write and produce her own stuff.

Scary Movie 6 is coming, y'all!

Show can definitely survive without her. It's not remotely the same show it started out as. But I find it curious Lorre has such a hard time keeping his lead stars around.

I saw a taping of Big Bang Theory once. Lorre was picking on Jim Parsons, seemingly just to mess with him. He had this speech that was long and contained a lot of lengthy Latin legal jargon and Lorre kept changing it on him. The poor guy was jumping through hoops and sweating bullets to get it right. Lorre seems like an abuser.

What was the name of the episode?

reply

The supporting cast is so big that even Janey could leave and they could just keep on going for a while.

Faris might go onto another sitcom but I really can't see her getting any more successful than what she already is. She doesn't really have any star power or X Factor etc about her. I guess she is just bored with the role.

The show will be quickly cancelled this season I think.

And... you were 100% correct!

So if Christy is gone, who's "Mom" now?
There's just "Grandma" now...

reply

yah......
the show is still OK, but already i miss Anna Faris

I was wondering why she was gone. Thanks for that info!
