Yeah, yeah it's just show but anyway, in a recent ep the 2 main characters are shocked to find food in their fridge and then worry that the guy in the wheel chair is spending too much money.

But they eat out all the time in that diner? Is the rich friend paying or are they poor because of all the diner meals?

It was mentioned several times through the show that the rich friend covers their tab. There was even an episode that discussed the situation in depth, season 5 episode 13. It is a very good one if you have the time I recommend watching it
