Transparent Televisions?
I saw they had those in the trailer and was wondering if they are actually things now, or if the movie is set in the future.

shareThe movie is set in the future, but not very far off. I don't think the actual year was ever stated. The technology is almost the same.
shareCurrently there are prototypes which have already been demonstrated at CES and some other tech shows. Panasonic in the last CES had a ~90% transparent display which is also touch controlled! It even has some augmented reality like effects as you can see (text and various textures and effects on a semi-transparent background). They are not many years away from the market, but initially they will presumably cost a fortune :

In the beginning of the movie the father is shown from outside the house and you can notice both the "transparent" televisions and he's reading on a transparent tablet (iPad-like).
I wonder how someone would be able to read text on a transparent screen. Notice how you can see the TV through the tablet. I can't imagine it's comfortable to use.

Transparent (translucid?) screens are stupid, since screens are designed not to see through them. The prototype from your link is 100% opaque when you're using it as a TV, which is the smart thing to do. Watching/reading/working on a transparent surface is counter-productive.
There's an interesting little clue that will tell you when the story possibly takes place. One of the characters mentions that electricity was invented 140 years ago. Assuming she was referring to Edison's first light bulb in 1879, that would place the story sometime around 2019 or 2020.
shareElectricity was discovered, not invented. Well before light bulbs.
shareTransparent screens are the jetpacks of the early 21st century: utterly impractical but nothing screams "future" like having them in your movie.

They have HUDs for car windscreens now.

The technology isn't that far off from what you see in the movie.
