Good Movie / Stupid Movie: Both?

Reading most of the message board comments, as well as the reviews, it seems that most hate the movie, but some love it. There are very few in the middle.
It is from a book, so any plot points that seem stupid are attributable to that.
One significant theme in many comments is the feminist / lesbian undertone. I guess it is there is you want it to be, but (and I am a guy) I think that if the actresses, and the director, were not known for their sexual orientation as well as devotion to "feminist" film making (whatever that is), then it wouldn't even be an issue. Perhaps only insecure men raise the topic. And maybe it is because of a few stupid moves the characters make (men included, by the way).
See this movie is you want a family drama set in a post-electricity World. It delivers an entertaining story, and for the most part a plausible one. The acting, directing, and entire production are very good.

no, stupid movie for me:
no electricity for a year? no communication at all, does a government exist in this movie universe? let's assume North Korea nuked everything, still no educated people could/would reunite people to recreate a civilized town?
Again let's assume it's like the road, or the book of Eli: in this movie there is no catastrophe shown or known about.
Couldn't they have found an alternative way to get electricity? one of the girls mentioned solar powered radio, building solar panels can be achieved with time, they even have a river.

I know the movie focuses on the energy dependency, and women survival.
But the sister had to go away at the very right moment the other girl was being raped, the car stolen. The rapist found the Gas pretty quickly.

I don't care about lesbian tone, I really didn't see it.
Feminist tone, maybe but if the girl was just raped in a few minutes very easily doesn't seem to be too feminist for me. She could have defended more until her sister came back or at least tried.

many stupid things like the father dying of a cut on the leg, he couldn't have lost so much blood in a few minutes.

It was a lot slower and more passive than I thought it would be. Kind of like the chick version of The Road - hold onto honour vs hold onto hope or something.

So I didn't think it was a good or stupid move - I just thought it was an OK but boring movie.

kept me interested until the laughable burning down of the house, which was insanely stupid. much like having a baby in that situation

All good replies.
And yes: burning the house to go live in a tree seems stupid (they explained the reasons, but....)
And I also think that The Trigger Effect was a more realistic view - though in an urban setting - than this movie. In that one, the electricity eventually comes back on though.
By far the biggest threat to anyone living "off the grid" and mostly self-sufficient would be the lack of refrigeration. Lacking hot water or a hot stove are inconvenient, as is electric or oil/gas heating, but not being able to keep food chilled as well as medicine (like antibiotics) would be the cause of death for most people.

BTW, how could what looked to me like a very nice house simply collapse after 18 (?) months? Not to mention have developed so many leaks/so much mold in the meantime? Do people replace their roofs every six months in those parts, or what??

Burning it down *was* stupid. I'm sure there were items left behind which they - or rather Nell, as Eva seemed ready to leave taking nothing! - would realize they needed/could use. But then, I'm annoyingly practical.
