Great direction, great dialog, and a fabulous sense of pacing, but the characters are awful. This jazz teacher would’ve been fired decades ago. Makes no sense. But i think the movie is so well made that people ignore how cartoonish Jk Simmon’s character is, and how douchey and unlikable Miles Teller is.

shareWrong. Conservatoires only recently started getting a proper look-in from educational standards boards. Abusive teachers from older generations (and sometimes from other countries where drill-sergeant teaching is the norm) have lurked in these places for decades.
Simmons did a great portrayal of one, and he was matched by Teller’s superb rendition of what it’s like to be on the receiving end.
