Why was the waitress so rude??

She asked, "What don't you want?" and acted like doing her job was an inconvenience. Don't they work for tips?

reply

It was small town restaurant, probably family owned, and since townsfolk eat T-bone steak and fries, they get to order that, they don't anything else. She made a point about an outsider ordering a trout in '87, so her attitude was mainly aimed at outsiders.

reply

LOL, yeah

....and referencing 1987 shows how long she's worked there -- and probably hates or is sick of her job.

reply

Ironically her attitude would fit right in with some New York joints. Speaking of 1987, and how people aren't that different, she also does remind me on state-owned restaurants from the socialist era.

t-bone steak and a baked potato.

steak cooked medium rare.

ice tea to drink.

the choice is between green beans or corn on the cob. I would have picked the green beans.

Honestly sounds like the best food anyway.

reply

Right? Yum. I would've chosen corn.

reply

Me too, which is to say I *wouldn't* have picked the green beans.

Because she's too old and ugly now to get a good tip, so she just doesn't care anymore. What would be the point?

So you think the only reasons customers tip is if the server is young and pretty??

reply

The main reason to tip is for good service (and of course being personable and not rude.) But I am absolutely sure that younger and more attractive servers will get far better tips for the same level of service or less. That's just human nature. You may be above that, but I don't think most people are and it isn't necessarily something that is done consciously on the customer's part.

Who could blame the waitress in the movie who was well past her prime for being cranky? It's ageism for sure which affects earnings in many fields. I have no doubt that I am closer to her age (66) than you are, so I know of what I speak. With age respect doesn't necessarily follow. Also, you shouldn't suggest that you know what I think by starting off with "So you think...".

Also, you shouldn't suggest that you know what I think by starting off with "So you think...".

Uh, yeah, that's why I put a question mark at the end. A question isn't telling anyone anything, it's asking. And that is what you suggested however.

reply

You're wrong.

reply

You're wrong.

LOL, wrong about what? ...based on what? You accused me of making an assumption when I was clearly asking a question (which I then went on to provide proof of). Which part was wrong exactly?

reply

You simply added a question mark at the end of an assumption. That doesn't make your assumption a question. It's a loaded question and a tool for a passive aggressive personality.

Anyone who sees your question and removes that bit of punctuation can plainly see that it is an assumption that you are trying to disguise.

"So you think the only reasons customers tip is if the server is young and pretty."

versus

"So you think the only reasons customers tip is if the server is young and pretty?"

You are just playing games with semantics and it's plain to see it is your assumption.
