Why did they make a point of repeatedly saying

she wasn't going to die? The first time he said it I turned to my girlfriend and said , 'oh, so she obviously dies then.'

Why try and do such an obvious anti-twist. Did it fool anyone? I can't imagine so. Would have been better if they just let the movie play out.

Just commit suicide at four please.

I think that Greg's repeated claim that Rachel doesn't die, expresses his deep wish that she had beaten the cancer.

I think it's like when Greg's teacher told him about his dad and the German music and how he never really left him, even after she died Rachel was still helping Greg with the goodbye card and the college application, by the end of the film Greg accepted that she had passed and also that she was not truly dead, whatever happens for the rest of his life Rachel will always have been a huge part of the person he turns out to be.

When they're having ice cream, Earl says that Greg has trust issues. He can't trust anyone (not even his family) to tell him the truth. And this is what he's learned all his life.

So that's what he does... he lies. To himself and us, the audience. So, he turns into his parents and we become a little bit like Greg, not trusting his words.

It's not a plot twist, it's just that nobody ever told him to do things the other way.

would have been an 8 from me, but am knocking off a point for explicit narrative deception, i get lied to all day at work, i want my escapism time to be on my side :)
