Opinion: One of the worst films of 2015

This is a movie disguised as a love letter to the movies, a trope that has earned many better films a whole lot of awards, but what it Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is in actuality is a blatantly awful film with terrible, wafer thin characters and a pitiful reliance on its only ace-in-the-hole, that of the titular Me (Thomas Mann) and Earl’s (RJ Cyler) penchant for making parody short films of their favorite entires in the Criterion Collection: http://www.cutprintfilm.com/features/the-worst-films-of-2015/

So, you look at yourself as the savior of dull movie-goers, if we all would just ask you first then we could avoid wasting our money. Is that why you think posting your high-schoolish "reviews" are an important use of the web?

A few of your other recent posts are titled:

Black Mass (2015) - Surprising how bad this was; one of the year's worst

Chappie (2015) - Definitely one of 2015's worst

Insurgent (2015) - Insurgent is one of 2015's worst films

You seem to be making a career of viewing all the "worst" movies. Or maybe you just aren't a very good judge of what viewers want to see??

I disagree completely.
I thought it was a lovely film and wish it had more recognition and in my opinion, it was one of the BEST films of '15 and I would love to see it get an academy award nomination but sadly know that is highly unlikely.

Did anyone else agree with ME, they LIKED this film?

reply

Well yes, cindy, a full 75% of the user votes for this movie are in the 7 to 10 range, so lots of people like this movie.

Why are the characters "terrible" and "wafer thin"?

To me, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which I viewed twice in the theater, is a very good film and one of the year's ten best. The movie is analogous to a jazz composition where the musician takes a pop standard—in this case, a trite Love Story type of narrative—and alters the elements substantially to create something remarkably different, ironic, personal, and genuinely moving. Often times, eccentric or quirky films of this type are clever yet lack for poignancy and soul. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, conversely, is full of poignancy and soul, and it achieves those elements by subverting expectations and turning cliches inside-out.

By the way, I also consider Black Mass very good and one of the year's three or four best feature films.

Completely disagree. Should have been nominated for Oscars in several categories, at least best picture, best screeplay.

way better than some of the other Oscar nods

I've been accused of liking a lot of "fake deep" crap, but wow this movie. All of this flashy criterion titles, ohhh high school, ohhhh really basic camera tricks to make you feel smart, and self referencing and meta. This is easily the worst movie I've seen this year, and I watched Aaaaaaaah! Maybe I don't like it because I strongly identify with the main character, but I'd like to think I'm a little more objective.
