Music

Although there are some pacing issues that are a bit frustrating during the middle few episodes, this is typical of most anime (e.g. tons of inner reflection, flashbacks within flashbacks, etc.) so I can take that in stride and bear through it. Other than that, I quite like this series, although it doesn't quite top series like "Last Exile", "Now and Then, Here and There", maybe "Xam'd", etc. (which incidentally has a fantastic opening sequence with a kinetic song by "Boom Boom Satellites", unlike most anime, which I usually can't endure for more than 10 seconds).

But I'm posting here mainly about the score. I'm really digging it. It's a bit over the top, but for some reason it works for me (kind of like the music from "The Big O"). For some reason the "Attack On Titan" score feels similar to what the music in "Pacific Rim" did for me. Maybe it's tapping into that inner 13 year old. Who knows. But I like it! Anyone else? Is it too much? Or does it hit the spot? To clarify, I'm referring to the score during the episodes, not the opening credit sequence, which isn't bad, but I don't find very engaging.

Yes I quite like the score too, it's way dramatic and over the top which is pretty much what the anime is, quite fitting.

I completely agree - the music in this is amazing!! I've always loved anime music and as a pianist I've really taken to all the piano scores in many series and games and this show has really renewed my passion for this type of music.

I also like some of the more modern music they've tied in too (some of it reminds me of an Asian version of 30 seconds to mars).

Oh yes, the soundtrack is pretty dope. I just listened to the whole soundtrack a couple of days ago while cleaning windows, and I tell ya, window cleaning has never been so epic.

And yeah, I think the slight pomposity fits nicely into the atmosphere of the show. I mean, one can't really get much closer to that end-of-the-world feeling than having humanity forced inside walls and enormous titans rampaging around and eating people alive at every turn, right? I dislike over-the-top music in TV shows if they don't have a proper setting for it, but AoT justifies it pretty much perfectly.

I especially enjoy the theme (not the opening sequence) called, surprise surprise, "Attack on Titan"... It's possibly the most dramatic track included in the score. The vocal part just blows your brains out.

Definitely over the top and dramatic, but that's anime for you. I love the score.

I really don't like it, actually. It's just too... teenager'ish? Maybe i'm a bit cliche, but more orchestral music like in escaflowne would have made me happier.

But I will admit that this music goes along with the overly dramatic kids it centers around, so.

It is indeed over the top. Maybe melodramatic is a way to describe it. I recall "Big O" being the same way. For whatever reason though it struck a cord with me, perhaps by tapping into my inner thirteen year old.
