Does anyone else find this a bit strange? To make it to Erens basement they need to reclaim the entire outer ring and kill of the presumably hundreds and hundreds of titans there?

Couldnt they just send a crack platoon of recon guys, have a bunch of them lure off the titans in erens home city (it was the same layout as trost so this should work just fine) and then have eren and a couple of guard make a beeline for the basement? In and out in like 30 minutes. The cellar might be blocked off or collapsed or whatever but on the chance it isnt and they can just raid their way in and out, why wouldnt they try it? It might make taking the wall maria region possible... As it stands they havnt got a lot of hope of kicking the titans out of that zone, they lost dozens of elite guys just trying to clear out Trost...

Titans sleep at night and if you are just a couple of stealthy people surely you could get in there without disturbing any titans... Its like they have absolutely NO concept of stealth operations despite having half their military devoted to scouting and recon... I dont understand this.

There is nothing to understand.

Its pretty simple.

Reiner and Bertold and the Ape Titan are in wait.

This chapter just released just revealed they were setting a ambush and Erwin even pointed out theres no point fixing the wall and getting to the basement if those guys are gonna be there to destroy it and stop them.

They need to defeat and wipe out the enemy to ensure their main objective goes without a hitch.

There's no point doing stealth when your enemy knows you're coming. Stealth went out the window ages ago. Its all about being quick and hoping for the best now.

At the moment the arrival of the Ape Titan kinda puts their plans to s..t since no one knows about him or what he is. But dealing with Reiner and Bertold when it comes to it should be hard yes, but they're more prepared for them.

The current mission has two objectives, both have been goals of the Scouts for as far back as I can remember. They align because there is no getting to Eren's basement unless humanity reclaims wall Maria.

The mission to retake Trost was prior to Eren's hardening abilities, and he needed to be protected from Titan threat while he traveled with the boulder to seal the hole. They also knew exactly the threat they faced unlike the Shiganshina district. In other words, sometimes the most direct path to success bears the greatest resistance.

That said, the secrets that lie in Eren's basement isn't an extraction mission. They don't even know what they are after to extract. Once there, they need the time to be able to ascertain as much information as possible, which may very well take days if not longer. They need to eliminate all titan threat in the Shiganshina district in order to do this.
