I was with this show until...

the kid turned into a Titan. That's fairy tale-level magic. You can't spend so much time establishing a world and its rules and then suddenly change everything up to that level. If the world were a literal dreamland, such as Oz or Wonderland, where nothing is supposed to make sense, then I could buy that, but there was nothing to suggest that world had fairy tale rules up to that point, other than the size of the Titans.

Never say "Worst movie ever" to someone who's seen Highlander 2

It's a show about man eating giant... pretty sure that's not very believable either.

Yeah, I still like the show, but I think it could have been much better if Eren had stayed dead. At the time, I thought it was a brilliant twist to just kill off the main character only 5 episodes in. I'd love to see a show brave enough to do that. Thing is, I don't want someone to tell me a show where that happens for real, because then it wouldn't be a surprise. Real catch 22.

I'm a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar.

This was exactly the point which turned me off too. Since then I've gone back to it and sort of come to appreciate it for what it is, but back then I saw it as almost a copout because even though titans had human anatomy, the threat was completely outside humanity's realm and the physics of the world presented were realistic (unlike a human turning into a titan within seconds). A greater reason like extraterrestrials, cosmic retribution/ justice, or nature balancing out the population or their apathy etc..

But Eren and others can do it multiple times and completely heal their wounds, it's too convenient. Only way I'll accept it is if it's some sort of fusion of specially endowed individuals with entities or mass of energies from a parallel/ quantum universe, explaining the surge in electrical energy during their transformation. But like you said, they've chosen a fairy tale route and explanations are much simpler if not non-existent.

reply

I agree with you a fair amount. At first I didn't like the thought of losing the main character, but I got over it real quick, but then he came back as a Titan, how convenient and mentioned before; a copout. Still didn't ruin or break the series for me and was still a blast, but I do wish it took a different rout than another Japanese Godzilla versus Ultra-man.

reply

I agree. I ended up watching the remaining episodes, and enjoying the series for what it was. However, when they threw in Eren being a Titan, it did feel like somewhat of a cop-out.

What was so compelling to me was the idea of a real world, like our own, dealing with an otherworldly threat.

Throwing that suspense out the window with the Eren reveal just turned the series into basically another giant vs. giant anime...and, man, we've had enough of those already...

reply

I semi-agree. It felt like a cop out, but in all fairness the show did drop hints that there is a magic/science element that is far beyond everybody's understanding.

Eren's father kept secrets in the basement.

On multiple occasions they talked about the Titans just appearing out of nowhere and disappearing as if they teleported or something.

That being said, I don't think those hints were strong enough to suggest that oh my goodness Eren can transformorize into titans! It was a stretch....

reply

As the story progresses the reason for him being able to transform makes perfect sense and is VERY relevant to the story. There's much more going on in this story as you'll find out...if you stick with it. What's more, you learn soon why him being "eaten" caused that to happen and it wasn't just happenstance. Basically, he "needed" to be "harmed" for the "transformation" to kick in. I'll say no more...

In the paper today...tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page

It was supposed to indicate that intelligent titans are in fact humans, which actually leads to theories that titans are man-made.

If Eren had died right then and there, the Titans would have destroyed the remaining walls and humanity would have perished. Of course this would have been the most realistic scenario, but what would have been the point of the series then?
