I Watched It Until I Stopped
I watched all of season 1 just to see where all of this was going to go and, in a word, it went nowhere. I thought, just maybe, we would find out what was in the basement, but no, we weren't going to be that lucky. At the end of the season, they weren't even in a position to think about getting to the basement.
The real low point of this series is the writing as the animation had some interesting things about it. But the writing – jeez! There always tends to be some bluster about Japanese fighters, samurai or otherwise, but ridiculous screaming combined with the ill-timed mawkish introspection was beyond annoying. It's one thing to have fears or self-doubt but these characters were neurotic! As far as the action goes, it's obvious somebody got enamored with the concept of calling something "3D" and combining that with Spider-man's webslinging. The whole apparatus to their "3D" fighting required a lot of suspension of disbelief because it was unworkable to the point of silliness. Aside from that, during the big fight scene with some of that titan-on-titan action, it struck me that this is nothing more than yet another excuse to have a Godzilla movie where ridiculously large things pound each other to a pulp. At least it wasn't like Dragonball Z where no punch or special power was special enough to do any real damage to the fighters!
I'm just at a "who cares" point with this series because it's just going to be more of the same. And for those of you who may wonder what I consider a "good" anime, nothing beats Cowboy Bebop. It had good animation, good characters, much, much better writing, and a soundtrack, courtesy of Yoko Kanno, that is second to none. Of course, it had guys with katanas fighting guys with guns, but it seems you can't have an anime without that!
