Are the two titans that Hange was studying a reference to Sawney Bean? Sawney Bean was the leader of a cannibalistic tribe in Scotland. I figured that it might be used for irony since the Titans eat the humans.

shareThat's exactly the reason. In one of the episodes, the scientist tells the story of the a tribe of cannibals comparing them to the titans. After she finishes the story, she names the test titans as the leader of the tribe.
