why is this an 8 ???
everyone seems to hate it.
shareFrankly, I was not going to watch this based on the number of people I have heard say it was a boring piece of dreck. However my son told me I should watch it as he truly enjoyed it. I have to say I am confused as to the number of the people who didn't like this film. I found it beautifully filmed and paced, with wonderful performances and a story which made sense and more importantly made me think. I turned it off after the credits and my final thought was that this was a very good film, bordering on great. Guess I am in the minority and I can say i am happy to be anywhere (or any time?) where I watched this movie.
shareI may reconsider my not watching it.
shareYou're not the minority. That's why this movie is 8.
It's just a love it or hate it kind of movie. Most people like it apparently, thus an 8. I personally didn't like it, so I'm the minority here.
I saw this a while ago and I thought it was good.
I heard the book this movie was based on was even better.
The movie is based on a brilliant 56 page short story by Ted Chiang entitled "Story of Your Life". The subplot concerning Russia and China was added for the movie and is not in the original story. The story deals with free will vs determinism; and that our brains are wired according to the language we use and how that affects our perception of reality. The gift from the aliens was the language they taught us, which provided a new way for us to perceive reality.
shareThat's good to know. I liked how linguistics plays a key role in this kind of story too.
shareRatings dont always make sense but I know a lot of people who
liked it. I thought it was very boring, just plodding and predictable.
