$1b

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?view2=worldwide&yr=2017&p=.htm

Maybe it will get to 1.5b total just above Avengers (which would make it #5 all time after Avatar, Titanic, Force Awakens, Jurassic World)

reply

I'm sure the fanboys will find a way to convince themselves that it's a financial failure anyway.

reply

There was no way it wasn't going to cross a billion, even Rogue One managed that, the diminishing returns are notable, though. it's still tracking closer to how Rogue One did then TFA.

reply

[deleted]

They only get 50% from that $1b. And then you have to pay the cost of the movie, marketing, and so on.

Let's say they get a $200-300 million benefit, perhaps $400 million, depending on how much the movie makes in January. They paid $4,000 to buy the Star Wars franchise, plus (growing) loan interests.

Yeap, it's a financial failure.

reply

Even if they manage only $300 million a year net profit per yearly StarWars movie on a $4 billion investment that is a very healthy rate of return... it's 7.5% per annum...Far above their cost of capital...

But they'll probably end up closer to $1.5 billion total sales, which will result in a much higher net return... as that would push their annual returns well into the teens... Staggering corporate success for a "movie" and a healthy return on their capital...

Add to that toys revenues, etc... and they're probably doing very, very well...

The next movies won't have the severe nerd backlash (there is only one luke skywalker), but will have parental support for family viewing... they'll be pretty big return-wise...

reply

$300 million was an optimistic benefit for TLJ. Now it's already quite down the hill and it will be about that. You can add toys, but they're not selling that well.

For $4000 million investment, $300 million is a minimum rate of return, you could get that playing with treasury and bonds. Of course, toys will ad some more, but there's only one episode remaining in the trilogy, the Solo movie is in the brink of being canceled and the next trilogy is not gonna be the big event this one has been. Not to say the current movie has been highly disliked and this will decrease the box office for the next ones.

This movie needed to be bigger, and specially, more approved.

reply

Pretty sure the number 800million is what it took to square TLJ in the black...so no...they won't get 50% of one billion if that is the case...I'll try to find the article that made the claim.
As far as the initial 4+ billion investment...fairly certain it's been fulfilled...I'll also look about that.

As I told another poster...no it is not a financial failure! It is however a significant disappointment...no one anticipated it to do better than TFA (well accept me😳...and that was with the caveat of it being as good as critics were saying...and I can provide a link for naysayers πŸ˜‰)but likewise no one expected it to do 600-800 million less than TFA...and that is where this installment sits...

reply

It's not even a disappointment financially.

There has never been any indicators (i.e. forecasting, advance ticket sales, polling) suggesting this episode would perform anywhere near TFA. It has and continues to perform where it was always expected.

If it had been a masterpiece, it might have "broke out" and been able to milk the awards season for a broader audience and for a longer period. but no one ever expected that and likely never will for a franchise film.

reply

If a potential disparity of 800 million dollars is not a disappointment...then I'm glad you are NOT my financial advisor...just sayingπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

reply

Fanboys are the ones watching this garbage 3-5 times. You too, apparently.

reply

Oh the fanboys may hate it, but Disney knows they'll buy tickets anyway.

And that's why Disney isn't going to bother to please them or pay attention to their preferences, they're putting their efforts into getting all the other groups and demographics to come see "Star Wars". The people at Disney are no fools, unlike the faboys!

reply

Same thing happened with Titanic. The same 2,000 women with no lives watched it one million times each. Odd thing: Jack STILL died in the end.

Thank God for vibrators, with little Leo plug-in add-ons.

reply

I've personally seen on the net fanboys converse about seeing it 3-4 times. I'm confident that at least over 1 million SW fans around the world have seen it more than once. Some see it 3 times just to memorize every detail in that bullshit. Might as well leech it off the piratebay. It's so terrible that I will never watch it again, not even pirated version.

You know we can easily pull up the numbers and see that you are lying. Incredibly pathetic.

reply

[deleted]

I notice you don't cite your source. BOmojo shows TLJ outperforming R1 for this third weekend.

reply

[deleted]

You too lazy to open BOmojo? What is wrong with you? JarJar Binks thinks you are too annoying and is blocking you.

reply

[deleted]

I wouldn't bother wasting time replying with that sad talentless troll. It's like arguing with a child that you listen to,just to humor them. Hell, that might actually be the case in this instance too.

reply

Liar! Obvious why pathetic Trolls never cite sources.

TLJ beats RO every weekend, grosses $77m more after four.

[deleted]

So landofree what was that about Last Jedi being a box office bomb? It hit the billion dollar mark as expected. It still a bomb?

reply

[deleted]

Nope I never said it was all a profit. I am asking is 1 billion dollars a bomb? If it is still not profiting how much does it need to make in order to profit? Second a critical bomb?

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star_wars_the_last_jedi

http://www.metacritic.com/movie/star-wars-episode-viii---the-last-jedi

Nope critically it is just fine. Are you talking the reception by people? If that is what you meant you might have a case but critically it is considered a rather amazing film.

reply

[deleted]

Where are you getting your math for the profit from? Also what other critics could you be talking about? Rottentomatoes and Metacritic averages out scores from all critics. Therefore point me to the critics you are talking about. Remember imdb is a user based website and the user audience score on rottentomatoes and metacritic are not professional critics.

So when you say it is a critical disaster it is a baseless claim. Second no you just do not want it to be a profit therefore you are throwing out a number you do not think it will achieve. The movie budget is 200 million. Lets say the advertising cost an extra 300 million dollars which it did not but lets play the devil's advocate. That would still make it a profit since they hit 1 billion dollars.

reply

[deleted]

Okay then if Rottentomatoes and metacritic are studio shrills point me to the critics you are talking about. You wont which proves that it is a baseless claim.

Never said all box office returns are profits. A movie has to go far beyond what it cost to make to make profit. Crossing over the billion dollar mark has made the Last Jedi a profit.

The cut between Lucasfilm and Disney? Um Disney bought Lucasfilm a couple of years back maybe you missed that... Okay then provide the math since you seem to have it all figured out. I find it interesting how you claim to know all this stuff yet you fail to provide any proof.

Lets be honest anyone who disagrees with you=studio shill.

reply

[deleted]

You have no proof it is not a profit. Baseless claim.

Again prove it you can't.

Then which critics are not shills?

You called it a critical disaster yet will not provide the evidence to prove that it is one.

reply

[deleted]

You're the one claiming to have proof not me. 1 billion dollars is my proof bud lol. Where is yours?

If they're all shills then there would be no way of determining if it is a critical disaster. Again baseless claim.

I do not believe they are studio, shills that is you. You claim that yet fail to prove it. You expect me to believe that and take your word at face value?

You claimed all critics are studio shills. So how can I prove it's a success if you believe they are all shills? Thing is you can't claim it to be a critical disaster because since they are shills you do not know their opinion.

As I said a studio shill is any critic that disagrees with you.

All I have to do is present the numbers that is my proof you have none.

reply

[deleted]

Nope I said it was a profit and you can't prove that it isn't. If you could have you would have done it by now. Case Closed! Nice try though lol.

reply

[deleted]

Budget for Last Jedi is 200 million. Even if you boost the advertising budget to make it 400 million 1 billion would still be a profit. It is rather simple math. Case closed!

reply

[deleted]

No the numbers are all out there in the open bud. If all these other factors are out there go ahead and prove them by showing them all to us. You wont because a lot of these are imaginary. You hate the film so you will make up any excuse you can to discredit it. Provide the proof, put up or shut up. I will wait.

reply

[deleted]

Good thanks for the victory now be gone.

reply

[deleted]

LMAO nah. When a person can't accept another opinion you know they are ignorant.

reply

[deleted]

Flop

reply

[deleted]

Yeah, it's a huge financial success. It's almost like a major company like Disney, with a proven track record of quality films in it's past, knows what it's doing more than some crybaby basement dwelling fans who can't move past the original trilogy.

reply

[deleted]

Didn't take long for all the delusional trolls to gather. Landofree and dorkpost, but Queenie not awake for the good news.

reply

[deleted]

I just exposed you as a pathetic liar above!

reply

I think half of those dipshits are the same person.

reply

Weird how some fanboys insist on touting box office numbers like it means so much. Star Wars has enough of an established audience (many fanatic) that would still show up for multiple viewings of a "Star Wars" film that featured nothing but a literal giant turd floating through space for an hour and a half.

reply

Not if the turd is a Mary Sue

reply

Who cares how much it makes? Are you getting a cut or something? Even if you are a Disney shareholder, the movie division accounts for only a small part of the company. The theme parks make up a much larger share.

reply

It's hard to think at this point that it won't end up as the highest grossing film of the year. It only needs about $200 million more globally to beat Beauty and the Beast and it takes the crown.
