Did anyone else wonder why they rebelion didn't just use a few kamikaze pilots to eliminate the empire ships?

When you see the utter destruction of the main rebel ship when it goes into hyperspace directly at the empire's ship, why in the world didn't the rebels just find some pilots to volunteer to do the same thing with some of the freighters in their convoy? Would seem that launching even half a dozen kamikaze freighters into hyperspace at the empire ships would have beaten the empire in a matter of seconds.

Because the Light Speed Bullet is a Gigantic Plot Hole!! It was placed in the movie because Johnson thought it would look cool but didn't think it through.

Why didn't they just light speed ram the super star destroyer at Endor? Why not try it on the death star in a new hope? Because it was never meant to be a something that was a plausible tactic. Other wise it would make the extremely expensive Imperial Navy useless to a band of kamikaze rebels especially considering we have droids in this universe.

I'm assuming that Light speed would be extremely to hard to pin point a direct impact. Or that a Defector shield would make it more like a bouncy ball than a bomb but that would be just my thinking.

It also ruins anything in the future. Any threat I'm just going to be thinking oh no big problem just light speed ram it and we'll be fine.

These movies are written by hacks, who have no idea, what SW is.

reply

No, these movies are made by creative people who know plot is a means to convey theme and emotion and that 'literalists" are small-minds who call creative people hacks from behind their keyboards so they can reassure their egos.

reply

There's no plot. Are you stupid?

reply

You may not like the plot but there is a plot. This isn't Antonioni.

reply

Yep, the slowest race in movie history :) . What a multilayer lyncheske plot we could experience here!

reply

So making each and every battle in SW completely (!) useless (even the fight at the ending of the film is completely pointless) is creative writing in your point of view :) . I see your point here :) .

reply

Assuming that all of their ships are in the one place. I think the war will still continue in various places and with other ships, and if ships are hard to come by for the Resistance than throwing them like bombs would be a huge mistake and could result in the final loss of the war to them.

reply

This, and that you would need a ship of similar or greater mass relative to the target ship. This tactic would have little effect against a Star Destroyer if you attempted it with an X-Wing. To take out such a massive vessel, you need something of similar mass, thus the use of a Mon Calamari cruiser here. This is also why this tactic wouldn't work against a Death Star.

Also, as CoachGainz (and Han) pointed out, travelling through hyperspace aint like dusting crops (boy), it takes precise calculations. The lightspeed bullet tactic would miss more often than hit. Holdo just came up with it out of sheer desperation, maybe even knowing the odds against it working. It just so happened to be a great shot, a one in a million, like Luke's shot at the Death Star.

reply

The size of the ship wouldn't be much of a factor look at the damage a simple cannon ball does to a ship when fired... Now if you are talking about any ship hitting something at a faster than light speed it would wreck havoc on any sized ship it hit. And it can't be as difficult to aim a ship at hyperspace as you think because if you weren't dead on accurate how would the empire ships have reappeared right behind the rebels? Think about it they traveled an extreme distance and yet ended up right behind the ships they were chasing, any tiny miscalculation would have put them so far away when they left hyperspace that they wouldn't have been able to even see the rebel ships.

reply

The main reason is they are sticking with the World War 2 pastiche, where missiles were still mysterious Nazi superweapons, and not the default long range ordnance they are today.

Lack of volunteers?

Why didn't they fly small one-man fighters like X-Wings and A-Wings into the bridges of Star Destroyers?

It happens in Return of the Jedi to take down a Super Star Destroyer. It's a lot cheaper than using huge ships.

This is one point where Last Jedi can't be singled out. It's technically a bigger, prettier rehash of that scene in ROTJ.

reply

That's like asking why everyone didn't just target the bridge in Star Trek.

It was comical. There would be certain scenes where they would be like "target the bridge" and you'd be left to ponder exactly why everyone didn't do that every time they were in battle.

reply

Usually the bridges have extra shielding, this was even the case with Star Wars. The fighter got through after the protection was brought down and it still could have easily been destroyed before it got there..in this case it didn't happen. The flaw in that scene is the ship suddenly veering off and smashing into the Death Star...it could be explained that what passes for steering got hit and forced the ship off course and no one was able to correct it in time but that wasn't shown.

But I do agree with a another poster here. I think Johnson put the light speed attack in there because it looked cool and didn't consider the long term ramifications of the move. I really don't think Johnson considered anything before or after TLJ.

reply

Absolutely. This idiot is a simple optical "director". He doesnt give a damn about character arc or story. He just like to make nice 2.5 hours long tv ads. Thats his only purpose. And thats why Last Jedi is officially the worst Star Wars movie ever released.

KKs strategy to hire complete clueless idiots as directors so that she could influence everything at the movies herself, finally turned against her. Now she is the one which hired a complete idiot for a huge blockbuster.

reply

And then hired him to do three more movies because he was a good little doggy who rolled over whenever Kathleen the Dilettante had one of her great ideas.

reply

Noone wants to exchange place with her, when she has to explain to the producers and Disney executies why she almsot destroyed the most expensive label Disney ever bought single handedly :) . Either she will be fired in 2018 or being isolated at Disney. TLJ was here Waterloo. She will not survive that failure at Disney.

But then again .... as stupid as KK obviously is, it shouldnt be forgotten that the producers let her act that way without any limits. Hiring a complete clueless idiot as director was a huge risk. As a investor that would have been the moment where I stopped her. So beating KK is easy. And yes, she was the major part of this failure. But IMHO the producers should have stopped her way earlier.

reply

She is the top dog at Lucasfilm. Producers work for her. I think Disney's involvement is fairly minimal and probably has been limited to high level corporate issues like "We want at least one Star Wars movie every year", projected earnings, etc. So the shitshow that is the "new" Star Wars can be laid completely at her feet.

I disagree that Disney will fire her. TLJ is making a ton of money and TFA and R1 did the same. I doubt they will can her even if the Han Solo movie tanks.

reply

Nope, TLJ makes way less money then projected. And that is bad, bad news for the investors. They wanted a huge profit from this movie. And now its most likely that this movie will bring just some some profit. Not only got this movie a huge budget. But the marketing double that budget at least. Then you have the budget for the movie distribution itself, etc. . So this is dangeriously close to Batman V Superman.

And building such a huge failure at profit projections is the second lagest mistake you could make at movie production. So she is surely isolated at Disney right now (she surely has some new consultant now :) ). But I also think that it will take at least another huge failure til Disney even thinks about officially firing her.

reply

I don't know which projections you are citing, but I doubt Disney expected to match TFA. In terms of profit, TLJ is currently at $1.1 billion worldwide. Even if they didn't take in another dollar:

$1.1 billion - 35% theater cut (a 65% cut was negotiated for Lucasfilm because of the strength of TFA and R1) = $715 million - $200 million production budget - $100 million marketing budget = $415 million profit. KK is not getting in trouble for making them $415 million. She will get a huge bonus for it.

reply

Nope. It hadnt reached 1.1 billion. That was only projected. And China already lost more then 50% of its projection (China was estamated at low 120 million dollar. But in reality it made only 50 million dollar. So that worldwide projectiosn have to include that).

And 100 million is the marketing budget for a AAA video game. Not for a Star Wars movie. There you are at least at $ 200 million. And now you are at 200 milion profit before taxes. Instead of 600-700 projected. You have to find the investor which is happy about such a huge gap between the projection and reality. That is the reason why KK is now isolated at Disney. The Disney executives got nervous when Battlefront II had an fiscal backlash cause of the Lootcrate case and stopped its licensee EA. Now think in which position KK is right now after such a desaster. Projection far off of real profit.

And her real problem isnt even TLJ. Her huge problem is that SW is toxic now. Thanks to some poster here I got the ticket sale figures for the third week for the domestic market. And guess what: Appr. 80 million dollar! At the third week and this week even includes 2 holidays! The major share of your almost billion ticket sales came from presold tickets. As soon as it was known that this movie was a desaster the ticket sales crashed into the basement. So .... how should KK handle a toxic label? When she was the reason that this label became toxic.

You see now why she is in major trouble?

reply

The same reason we don't take Lamborghinis to war and drive them 200mph into enemy encampments. They'd get destroyed, and they are expensive.

reply

I see. Its way cheaper to buy and destroy dozens of Lamborghinis to destroy the same goal! The clueless puppet Ryan didnt had the smallest idea what he did to the SW universe. Only cause it looked so funny when the Hyperspeed ship crashed into other spaceships. But then again .... he is a mindless puppet. The problem are people which hier clueless puppets.

reply

[deleted]

Nope and nope. She actually watched how many rebel ships were destroyed before she even began to turn the ship around.

And driving a ship into another using Hyperspeed could be done by an 80s Lego Technics toy. You dont need your Kamikazes.

So yes, Johnson is the most brainless puppet out there! Destroyed each and every SW space battle once and for all only cause .... shiny, shiny lighting :) .
