Scathing!

Bump

Wow. He basically bluntly said this movie is indeed just fan faction created by Rian and not Lucas cannon.

reply

Which is odd because Luke's exile and reluctance to rejoin the fight was taken from Lucas's outlines....

reply

Do we know how much of that is really true? Lucas is known to say contradictory things.

Even if it is the case, we don't exactly know the plan Lucas had other than Luke being reluctant to join the fight. Also, Lucas seemed to be out of touch even with his own style. I don't mind the prequels at much as others, but there is no denying that some of his choices were strange and didn't make sense when all of his 6 episodes are combined.

Even if Lucas wrote it the same way, you would still have the backlash from fans just like when the prequels were released. This isn't even a major gripe I had with the movie,my problem was with overall tone, but I still rather have seen a different Luke...but I'm fine with his new direction.

reply

We know it's true. Pretty sure the backlash would have been the same regardless of who wrote it.

reply

I know that it is true, what I am saying is that we don't know how much is so similar. From what I gathered, the similarity is that Luke secludes himself and maybe had second guesses, but that's about it.

But yes, regardless of the writer, it would have generated backlash on midichlorian type levels.

By the time these movies are finally being made, Mark is an old fat guy. There's really not a lot of options on the table to go with his character. Making him an old recluse like both Yoda and Obi-Wan is kind of a no brainer. Lucas probably would have gone a similar route, simply out of necessity. But the issue isn't that so much as the established canon of what he's been up to the last 30 years, and the current state of the galaxy. Could have easily been a retired Luke with a successful Jedi school firing on all cylinders. Or a frustrated hermit Luke whose new Republic he fought to establish wanted nothing to do with a new Jedi order and wanted the old ways put to rest. Lots of ways to spin it without all the grim failure and severe character changes.

But that's precisely what Hamill states he thinks Luke would never do and he seems to blame that on Johnson when Johnson just got it from Lucas.

reply

Not only did he get it from Lucas in regards to Luke (and I did paste the link about the Last Jedi art book below), but Lucas did the same with Kenobi and Yoda.

I bet if the prequels had come out first, people would see episodes 4 & 5 and be disappointed that Ben and Yoda decided to simply hide and lay low while the Empire wreaked havoc in the galaxy for 20 years. At least the First Order was fairly new when Force Awakens started!

Also, I bet people would be disappointed that the heroic Kenobi from episodes 1 to 3 decided to sacrifice himself to Vader just to buy Luke a little bit of time to get off the Death Star (especially crushing considering that the Empire WANTED the Falcon to escape so it could be followed).

reply

Yes but how he got there and his actual feelings might have been totally different. It's fine for him to be on his own but many fans were upset with why he was alone. It is not as if they saw TFA and were anticipating something else. They didn't like how he got to this stage. And as I said, we don't know how Lucas even envisioned this either.

Yes and it's included in the Last Jedi art book: https://geektyrant.com/news/concept-art-revealed-for-george-lucas-vision-of-the-jedi-temple-for-star-wars-episode-vii

Luke in self-exile, mountainous island with greenery, old Jedi temple, female student as the new main character (even Luke replaced what was going to be a female main character in the original Star Wars saga).

All of that was going to start Episode 7 in Lucas' original ideas. Lucasfilm and Disney didn't fully throw out everything from before them, they used some Lucas influence and likewise they are also rebooting many Expanded Universe characters with new books.

reply

I replied above, but just to you now, while it may be that he was going to end up alone, fans are more upset with how he got there than him being there. The weren't this upset at TFA and were expecting him to be secluded in the new film, but they wanted a better explanation.

Edit :I think you kind of said as much in a previous post. But this is what I was getting at. And Lucas could have come up with a hundred things and this was one variant he came up with. Just saying the end result was the same as a Lucas vision, but getting there could be drastically different.

reply

Right..the beginning of his new story arc...not the end of it...

reply

Jake Skywalker - I knew it!!!

I respect Mark Hamill for having enough integrity to be honest and refusing to toe the line and be the mindless shill that Di$ney would like him to be, calling out the bastardization of his character and Star Wars in general.

reply

Hamill is just kind of an all around great guy, it seems like. You ever seen the way he used to sign his Star Wars cards back in the day? Just a good natured, likable dude, that Hamill. And yeah, that's awesome he's not like so many others that just smile and say whatever BS is expected of them.

reply

Hamill is a full-blown Libtard. However, KK and her little bitch RJ RUINED Luke Skywalker.
