The real spirit of the Star Wars films

After watching TLJ and reading some of the negative comments about the film, I started thinking about some of those comments and how they apply to the original trilogy also. Most complaints are due to decisions made by the creators that people do not agree with like giving Luke new powers or killing Snoke without giving him any backstory. But the Star Wars film where never about continuity in those areas, it was always about the interactions between the characters and the action set-pieces.
In the OT there are some things that are also thrown into the movie without much explanation. Think of the Emperor's lightning and lack of backstory or the Vader is the father twist that came seemingly from nowhere and they added that Leia was also family too. Those decisions would piss people today.
I'm not saying that you should like TLJ or be satisfied with the movie, but if you look back at the original trilogy you could pick many holes in the story and nitpick a lot of things and it was ever about that type of story consistency, but rather about the character relationships, how they interact with each other and the action scenes that have, for the most part, been great.
Just my two cents on a point that I think people have been overlooking

I understand what you are saying and I agree a huge part of the Star Wars success is the dynamic between characters, but I found that element lacking here. There was really no good interaction between any of the characters. Nothing particularly stood out to me between Rey and Luke, or Finn and Rose or Poe Dameron and Haldo.

Agreed, and I've brought up many of the same points, particularly with the Emperor having no backstory.

It's the prequels that created this expectation for everything to be linked and explained with backstory. It's prequelitis.
