Anyone Still Believe Rian Johnson Will Do New Trilogy?

There's a disconnect between the fans and the critics liking The Last Jedi. On Rotten Tomatoes an audience score of 57 vs 93 for critics.

Not now, but some time in the future I can see Johnson suddenly becoming unavailable to do the trilogy.

I hope the next director actually likes Star Wars.

reply

I hope not. He butchered the writing on this. I’d sooner he never wrote any kind of film ever again.

reply

Im honestly indifferent to the idea. I didnt hate it, i didnt love it. It was good enough, but there was a fair few jarring moments. The champagne at the casino felt very odd. Im sure someone said "gods speed", which is super weird. I might be thinking that rian didnt understand that this isnt a movie set in the future of humanity.

He makes it, he makes it. he doesnt, he doesnt. I wont lose sleep either way.

reply

Yeah "godspeed" was off-putting.

No one said "I've got a bad feeling about this."

THE TITLE OF THE MOVIE WAS SPOKEN IN THE DIALOGUE, I hate that!

I completely agree with you: "good enough" with "jarring moments."

Snoke was awesome, though. Too bad he's gone, but I like how it was done.

reply

The problem with Snoke is that they spent significant amounts of time in both this movie and TFA building the Snoke character, and the mystery around his origins and who exactly he is, only to destroy him Darth Maul style, leaving the questions unresolved.

I've edited my previous comment on this thread because, on reflection, I have no problem with Johnson's directing or cinematography - in fact, as Lucas himself said, it is a beautifully made film. If you judge it purely on it's visual artistry, it'd be the best SW film ever made. It is visually amazing. For me, all of the problems in it stem from the writing. The film should have been written by Abrams.

Show business is a business. It all boils down to money. If TLJ makes enough money, then Rian Johnson will get to do his trilogy project.

reply

They're also dealing with huge sums of money which makes them cautious meaning they will do the "safe thing". Johnson is getting very negative feedback from the fans which would make Disney question if people will pay to see his trilogy. At least multiple times.

Presently there's a petition to remove Last Jedi from canon and redo it which will be delivered to Disney. That doesn't help him.

reply

Sure he will get his own trilogy...it already comes with no Skywalkers baked right in! It's obvious that Rain hates himself some Skywalkers! And yeah...I spelled his name wrong on purpose...fuck him!

reply

Lol! Rain! He sure rained on this parade :/ But like I've said previously, I think the issue is his writing, not his directing or cinematography.

Disney does indeed appear to have an agenda to sweep away the remnants of the OT (Tarkin style). They even say so vicariously through Kylo Ren - "Let the past die". I think they might see this trilogy as a "passing the torch" scenario, after which they can write whatever stories they want without having legacy baggage restricting the creativity.

reply

Yeah...and passing the torch is not only cool with me ,but something I expected...IN EPISODE 9!!!
I just can't recon with seeing a Star Wars film that is solidly set in the Skywalker saga with no Skywalkers! I think eating a bug would come with less resignation...
