....we get something totally different in TLJ and now everyone is pissed. Lmao. Plus many now love the prequels.....Jesus Christ Star Wars fans are not consistent with their feelings. Lucas is probably great again as well. Boo hoo Luke died and wasn't the main focus of the film. Get over it Losers...lol...
Honestly, why they don't stay at home and watch the original trilogy a few thousand more times I don't know, they hate everything but those films. And now they're determined to hate, and keep on hating, they've watched the original trilogy a billion times and learned nothing from it.
I liked tfa and liked this. My brother hated tfa and hated this. It all stems from his expectations of the original cast. He wants the movies to be about them. I told him stop living in the past. He was all excited again before the movie. Was hoping for lots of Luke. I told him he was setting himself up for disappointment. I was right. Lol
I think there is a reasonable expectation of respect for what came before. I have not seen the film yet so I can't say for sure. However my expectation was he would be a key character but not a primary character, he was the carrot dangled at the end of TFA after all why do that if you intend to waste him? I will see it and judge for myself.
Even without a lot of Luke. The movie is dull as shit. Its got one Subplot that literally goes nowhere and the politics of the movie are also dull as shit. Probably the best thing about the movie was Luke. So having having more Luke would have actually made it better.
I enjoyed the prequels and The Force Awakens is one of my favorite Star Wars film.
Last Jedi would be a good movie if it were a stand-alone film. The problem is that it's supposed to be part of a trilogy, but it dropped themes that were introduced in The Force Awakens.
I never had a problem with Lucas and felt that he should have finished the trilogy. At least he would have went in a new direction storywise while keeping the original Skywalker family as the central focus. He and Kasdan made a fine team.
"while keeping the original Skywalker family as the central focus"
Actually, Lucas said his sequel trilogy concept would have left the Skywalkers behind and moved on to completely new characters. I don't even think there would be any baton-passing.
When only the original trilogy existed, Lucas said the prequels would be about how Vader turned to the darkside and the sequel trilogy would have an old Luke mentoring a young Skywalker. That eventually happened in the EU and latest trilogy with Ben.
He also said it was a Skywalker Saga with three trilogies then changed it to only two trilogies after the prequels were made. He really liked to mess with us fans. LOL.
Well that's definitely true, he changes his mind a lot.
When A New Hope was written, Vader actually was a warlord who "killed" Luke's father, although the plan was to have Luke's father still be alive and to return in the next movie. Leia of course was specifically to just be a princess, not a sibling.
And from what I recall, Lucas' trilogy of trilogies basically covered the same kind of ground that the original trilogy covered in three movies (it seemed he wanted them three times as epic). But I really only remember that the loose ideas for the last trilogy included introducing the Emperor, and he wouldn't be defeated until the last of that trilogy, the ninth movie total.
No storyline covering our current "preqeuls" existed back then with the trilogy of trilogies.
"No storyline covering our current "preqeuls" existed back then with the trilogy of trilogies."
Do you mean when the original trilogy came out? The prequels story was in the New Hope novel. A half page explaining that Vader and Obi-wan fought on a volcanic planet and Vader was seriously injured. It also explained how the Republic was once a democracy and couldn't be overthrown. But, corrupt persons became politicians and destroyed democracy from within creating a tyranny. By then it was too late to stop them. I remembered wanting that movie to be made.
I wouldn't mind Lucas changing his mind again and making a few more SW movies.
I think the main complaint is that the movie encompasses a 2 hour and 20 minute chase scene, the longest in the entire series. A highly unlikely premise, when all it would take is an order by Hux or Snoke to a couple of the Star Destroyers to hyper in from the opposite side.
That and maybe the lack of answers as to who Snoke is and now, was.
My complaints are not present in tESB...Luke is not handled poorly in Empire. The main villain is introduced in Empire...not killed. Chewbacca and R2 are not underutilized after thoughts in Empire.
Empire has an actual lightsaber duel. In Empire Luke actually ignites a lightsaber. The phrase " I've a bad feeling about this " is uttered in tESB...as well as every Star Wars movie to date...save this one.
Leia does not fly unassisted through the vacuum of outer space in Empire. Darth Vader does not become the main antagonist in tESB...nor ever! The force is never used as a silly plot device in Empire. No one is in danger of running out of gas whilst being chased during tESB.
The main villain is Kylo, not Snoke and one of the main themes of the movie is letting go of the past. The series is moving forward and that means that the old characters need to be left behind at some point.
And about that Leia thing, I too was bothered by that because it was unnecessary but it did not spoil the whole movie for me.
Dan I was just pointing out my complaints and how they can not be similarly found in empire. It is true that now...with 20/20 hindsight perspective...Kylo is the main antagonist, but it is also plainly obvious that Snoke was presented as such going in and continuing throughout this movie. Even upon Snokes demise, we the audience and the script itself is unsure of kylos ultimate fate s far as villainy is concerned.
As far as the theme of the film being moving on...great! But do handle it with tact and a respectful attention to not only the characters...but also the original fan base who have supported the franchises up to this point. My opinion is that this did not happen, but that seems to stray far from your original argument regarding tESB so I'll not continue. And while I never said Leias spacewalk spoiled the whole movie...I believe calling it merely unnecessary is a huge understatement! It was beyond fucking ludicrous, out of place, and a fine example of the mishandling of core characters this trilogy is becoming famous for. Leias character would have been better served dying along side Ackbar. Instead now we have to look forward to the awkward way she will be dealt with in 9...once again...not a problem in Empire!
What I was saying about Empire is that many people are complaining about stuff left unresolved in this movie, which is obvious because it is the second part in a trilogy. The fact that most of the things done by that characters in the film fail or make things worse, which also happened in Empire and the change in direction or tone compared to the first one.
Again, there are some things that I did not like about the movie, especially the Finn and Rose storyline, but besides that I think it is a good Star Wars film. Better than Force Awakens in my opinion but I get why people may disagree with some of the changes made in the movie but I do not think it was disappointing and definitely awful like some might say.
That kinda the thing. Moving on is all well and good. But it dosn't mean jack shit unless people actually give a shit about the characters. Everyone loved Luke, Han and Liea because they were awesome characters. Ive have yet to give a shit about Ray, Finn or Rose.
Moving on sounds like an excuse that a lazy writer/director used in order not to address any plot or story that was created in Force Awakens and canon from previous films. That's why this movie is getting such a strong negative reaction from some fans.
I like the new characters - except Rose - but I still want the original cast stories to be written well. Luke the hermit crank is out of character.
I think that this was a lot better than The Force Awakens which was just a remake essentially. It had it's stupid moments if course but I was entertained and not bored for the 3 hours.
