Will Steve Martin be whacky in this?
Like at Biko ? Sort of the same thing?
share"Will Steve Martin be whacky in this"? If he is, the movie will probably suck.
I'm really surprised that Martin was chosen for this role. The book was a snapshot of a bizarre time in American history, coinciding with the bizarre world that is Dallas Cowboy football mania. It did a good job at describing real life Cowboy's owner Jerry Jones. It definitely doesn't need more "whacky".
If Martin attempts to turn the character into a cartoonish jackass, it will mean the screen writers have lost the essence of the book. And I can't see him playing it any other way, so I am prepared to be disappointed.
But we shall see what we shall see.
Steve Martin described the film as a drama, so if he's funny, it'll probably be dry humor.
I find Oscar Bait infinitely more interesting than ticket bait
"I'm really surprised that Martin was chosen for this role."
If Martin can remind us of President Bush, not Martin himself, in the movie, that will be a good role selection. For example, there were a Martin's line "Fool me once, Shame on ..., Fool me twice, Shame on ..." in the movie.
How will Ang relate football to foolish bomb in the movie? We shall see.
He is not usually mentioned in the same breath as Nolan, Spielberg, and Fincher but this movie on paper looks like his third Oscar winner.
Life of Pi was the most visually stimulating movie since avatar. Broke back was one of the most difficult movies to make given its material and he made it great.
If this movie is as good as I think it will be, Lee will have certainly put himself onto the very short list of world class directors.
He's not mentioned in the same breath as Nolan by online fanboys but he is by anyone with taste. Lust, Caution is his best one for me. An absolute masterpiece.
sharek-man-3 and varmitydog -- I strongly suggest you check out Leap of Faith, in which Steve Martin played Jonas Nightengale, a flim-flaming faith healer.
He was excellent in this role, and "whacky" was the furthest thing from the part he played.
That's why I'm gonna take a leap of faith (sorry for the pun) and predict that he'll do justice to his role in Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk as well.

He is able to perform drama.
Spanish Prisoner is a good example.
Shopgirl is more RomCom but still very dramatic.
Novocaine was just graphic quirkiness, but in a psychotic way that made the audience feel sorry for his character, much like "One Hour Photo" and Robin Williams.
So, no, The character he plays is attainable without being wacky.
I have it on good authority he does his 'wild and crazy guy' routine at the end of the film.
